Marco Jansen's fine all-round display – 70 not out and 2 for 20 – helped South Africa A nudge ahead on Day 2 of the second unofficial Test against India A. The visitors, after South Africa A posted 297 in their first innings, went to stumps on 198 for 5, trailing by another 99.
Indian openers began on a positive note to stitch a half-century partnership before Stuurman struck in the 12th over to take out opposition's captain Priyank Panchal (24) and then trap Abhimanyu Easwaran LBW for a first-ball duck on successive deliveries. Lutho Sipamla then got in the act as he picked a third wicket in quick succession for the hosts by denying Prithvi Shaw a half-century by eight runs.
However, after Baba Aparajith failed to leave a mark, India hit back through another vital partnership worth 78 between Hanuma Vihari (45 not out) and Ishan Kishan (49), who also missed out on a fifty by a whisker to become Jansen's second strike on the day.
Vihari combined with Sarfraz Khan (30 not out) to see out the rest of the day without any hiccups and reduce India's deficit to double digits by close of play.
Earlier in the day, the hosts added 64 runs to their overnight score of 233/7 before folding, where Jansen hit his fifth first-class half-century in a crucial 48-run stand with last-man Stuurman, who chipped in with a valuable 27. Ishan Porel, after taking out the first wicket in the day of the overnight batter Sipamla, also affected the run out to bring curtains on South Africa A's first innings.
Brief scores: India A 198/5 (Ishan Kishan 49, Hanuma Vihari 45*; Glenton Stuurman 2-46, Marco Jansen 2-20) trail South Africa A 297 (Marco Jansen 70*; Ishan Porel 3-49) by 99 runs
