Healy top scored with 57 in the chase
Alyssa Healy put the low scores against India in the T20I series behind her with a solid half-century to help Sydney Sixers make a winning start to their Women's Big Bash League campaign. Sixers beat Melbourne Stars by six wickets after chasing down 99 in 10.2 overs.
Stars were propped up by Elyse Villani's 31-ball 54 and posted 99 from their 11 overs in the rain-hit encounter. Sixers 83 for 1 at one stage but stuttered a touch before getting over the line.
In the chase, Shafali Verma made 8 off 10 but Healy ensured the team got off to a solid start. When Verma fell – on the fifth ball of the fourth over – Sixers had already scored 40. Ashleigh Gardner too failed to get going and was dismissed for 7 off 12 but Healy kept the score moving during their 43-run stand. In fact, none of the batters were able to challenge the Stars bowlers apart from Healy. Sophie Day bowled Healy in the fourth over but the Sixers were just five runs away from a win.
Earlier, after being put in, Star openers Villani and Annabel Sutherland made 49 for the first wicket in 5.5 overs to lay a platform for the middle order. However, they were able to manage just 50 runs of their last 31 deliveries with both Villani and Meg Lanning staying unbeaten.
Brief scores: Melbourne Stars 99/1 in 11 overs (Elyse Villani 54) lost to Sydney Sixers 100/4 in 10.2 overs (Alyssa Healy 57) by six wickets.
