Australia's tour of New Zealand for three T20Is – scheduled to be played in Napier next month – has now been cancelled, Cricket Australia confirmed on Wednesday (February 9).
The short series was arranged on the basis New Zealand government's plan to ease restrictions at the Trans-Tasman borders, but that wasn't the case. The two boards – CA and NZC – agreed to shelve the series because the Government's plans were now substantially delayed, and there were no Mandatory Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) accommodation available for the Australian side on their scheduled arrival into New Zealand.
“At the time we scheduled the visit there was a lot of hope that the trans-Tasman border would be open for those who met the right criteria,” NZC chief executive David White said. “However, the advent of Omicron has, unfortunately, changed everything at the border, and has made it impossible for us to continue with the series.
“It's disappointing – but we know it's the same for businesses and individuals and other sports, and we're grateful for the international schedule we have.”
Australia were to play the three games in New Zealand on March 17, 18 and 20. As a consequence of this cancellation, Netherland's one-off T20I on March 25 scheduled to be held at the Bay Oval in Tauranga, will now be played at Napier's McLean Park.
