Bangladesh's domestic season kicks off with the 23rd edition of the National Cricket League – the country's traditional first-class tournament – that will begin on Sunday (October 17). The last edition of the NCL was abandoned after two rounds due to COVID-19 after which the BCB at a later stage decided to scrap it altogether and start from scratch.
Dhaka Division will take on Sylhet Division in the opening tier-1 match at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium Academy, while Khulna will face Rangpur in the other tier-1 match at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. In tier-2, Chattogram will take on Rajshahi at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, while Dhaka Metro will be up against Barishal at the Cox's Bazar Academy.
Ahead of the tournament that is expected to run until November 24 with all eight teams playing six games in their respective tiers, players were up and about at practice sessions on Saturday after completing three days of mandatory hotel quarantine.
Lower-tier cricket resumes after two seasons
Bangladesh Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis member secretary Ali Hossain told Cricbuzz that the lower-tier competitions – First, Second and Third Division Cricket Leagues – will start from November. The lower tier cricket was abandoned at the halfway stage due to COVID-19 while BCB refrained from hosting the tournament last season due to the same. CCDM, a BCB committee entrusted with the responsibility of hosting the tournament, had a meeting with lower-tier clubs at the BCB headquarters on Thursday where it was decided to start the lower-tier competition with the third division cricket league.
“The player transfer of the third division cricket league will be held on November 1 and 2 and we expect to start the league on November 15,” Hossain told Cricbuzz on Saturday. “Transfer of the second division will be held in the first week of December and the second division league will begin on December 15. The transfer of the first division will be held in the first week of January next year and the first division league will begin from January 15,” he said adding that the Narayanganj District Sports Council Ground would host the upcoming lower-tier competitions along with the other five venues.
BCB officials insisted there is a window for Bangladesh Premier League – the country's lone franchise-based T20 tournament in January while the Dhaka Premier League, the country's traditional club-based 50-over tournament, will start in March.
