Sunrisers Hyderabad had signed Rutherford as replacement for Jonny Bairstow.
Sherfane Rutherford has returned from the IPL following the death of his father. The 23-year-old Guyanese batter was signed on by Sunrisers Hyderabad recently as a replacement for Jonny Bairstow, who pulled out of the UAE leg of this 2021 season.
“The SRH family conveys its heartfelt condolences to Sherfane Rutherford and his family on the passing away of his father. Sherfane will be leaving the IPL bio-bubble to be with his family in this difficult hour,” the franchise tweeted.
Rutherford was a central figure in the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots side that clinched the CPL 2021 trophy. He was the team's second-highest run-getter, scoring three half-centuries in his tally of 262 runs for the season at a strike rate of 127.18.
The loss of Rutherford is another blow to the Sunrisers side languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2021 standings, having picked up a solitary win from eight games so far. The 2016 champions, who have Jason Roy as cover for the opening spot, are going to be without T. Natarajan and Vijay Shankar for the coming games after the former tested positive for Covid-19 and the latter was identified as a close contact.
