Benefits of Marcus Aurelius A Life By Frank MclynnFew ancient figures have been as influential or as revered as Marcus Aurelius. A Stoic philosopher and Roman emperor, Aurelius was known for his wisdom, his humility, and his belief in living a virtuous life. In recent years, interest in Aurelius has skyrocketed, thanks in part to the popularity of books like The Daily Stoic and Ryan Holiday's best-selling biography of the emperor. But why is Marcus Aurelius so popular today? What can we learn from him that's relevant to our lives 2,000 years later? Here are four lessons from the life of Marcus Aurelius that can help us live better lives today: 1. Live with Purpose Aurelius believed strongly in living a purposeful life. For him, this meant using one's talents and abilities for goodâto benefit others rather than oneself. This philosophy is captured perfectly in one of his most famous quotes: âWhen you wake up each morning ask yourself what you want to accomplish that dayâ¦and then do it.” Living with purpose requires thoughtful reflection on what we want to achieve each dayâand then having the discipline to take action towards those goals. It sounds simple enough but it's not always easy to do (as many of us know all too well). But if we could all live more like Marcus Aurelius didâwith purposefulness and focusâimagine what we could achieve! 2.. Buying Guide for Best Marcus Aurelius A Life By Frank MclynnThe best biography of Marcus Aurelius currently available is Frank McLynn's “Marcus Aurelius: A Life.” This book chronicles the life and times of one of Rome's most beloved and respected emperors. Aurelius was born into a patrician family in AD 121 and raised in a privileged environment. He was educated by the best tutors available and grew up to be an intelligent and inquisitive young man. When he was only 16, his father died and he became head of the family. In 161, Aurelius married Faustina, the daughter of Antoninus Pius, who had been emperor since 138. The following year, Antoninus died, making Aurelius sole ruler of the Roman Empire. During his reign, Aurelius faced a number of challenges, both internal and external. In 156-7 there was a major rebellion in North Africa led by a man named Lusitanus. This was followed by another revolt in Britain in 165-6 led by an enigmatic figure called Quintus Lollius Urbicus. Both rebellions were eventually put down, but not before costing Aurelius dearly in terms of money and manpower. He also had to deal with ongoing problems with the Germans on the Empire's northeastern frontier. Despite all these difficulties, Aurelius remain stoic and resolute, qualities which earned him great admiration from his contemporaries. In 180 Faustina died suddenly while on campaign with her husband in present-day Hungary; her death caused Marcus much grief. The following year another blow befell him when his adoptive brother Lucius Verus perished from some unknown malady while on campaign against the Parthians in modern Iraq/Iran. These two deaths deeply affected Marcus emotionally; indeed it has been argued that they hastened his own demise just two years later at age 58. Nevertheless he continued to rule effectively until his dying days despite increasing ill health brought on by gout or some other affliction (the historical record is unclear). When Marcus Aurelius died on March 17th 180AD at Vindobona (modern Vienna), he left behind a widow and 13 children plus an adoptive son (Commodus). He also left behind a legacy as one of Rome's most revered rulers thanks to his intelligence, dignity and civic virtue – despite being dealt more than his fair share of bad luck during his lifetime!
