Victoria put themselves in a strong position in their Sheffield Shield game against New South Wales by reducing their opponents to 139/9 at Stumps on a rain-affected Day 2.

NSW were trailing by 174 runs after a major collapse which resulted in them losing six wickets for only 41 runs. Scott Boland bagged three wickets while James Pattinson and Will Sutherland picked up two apiece.

Victoria, who started the day at 283/6, finished with 313/9 declared, with Sutherland scoring a useful 23. However, they lost spinner Jon Holland to concussion after he was struck on his helmet by a Liam Hatcher delivery. Skipper Peter Handscomb decided to declare the innings, and it was later decided that Wil Parker would be used as a concussion substitute with Victoria ruling out Holland's participation for the remainder of the game.

New South Wales got off to a steady start with the bat, with Daniel Hughes anchoring the innings by scoring a patient half-century. But his run out started the collapse as NSW slipped to 102/7, losing four wickets for four runs.

Peter Nevill and Nathan Lyon attempted a recovery with a 30-run partnership but NSW lost two wickets in quick succession leading to Stumps.

Brief scores: Victoria 313/9 decl. (Nic Maddinson 128, James Seymour 105; Liam Hatcher 4-86, Nathan Lyon 3-63) lead New South Wales 139/9 (Daniel Hughes 59; Scott Boland 3-33, James Pattinson 2-27) by 174 runs.
