Saint Lucia Kings vs St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Final
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots won by 3 wkts
Dwayne Bravo lifts the trophy and joins his team mates. The confetti goes off in the background as the biggest party in cricket starts. Bravo wanted a new challenge as he mentioned at the toss and to come out of his comfort zone, hence he left the Trinbago Knight Riders and joined the Patriots to help them win trophies. The management also roped in the Universe Boss and in those two they had the two most experienced T20 players. And that experience was the difference in the end as Bravo made some vital decisions not only in this game but right through the tournament. It helped them qualify for the semifinals comfortably and they went on to win their first ever CPL trophy. Who said T20 is for youngsters? Experience also counts and here's proof of that. On that note, this is Akshay Maanay signing off on behalf of Pradeep Krishnamurthy, MS Ramakrishnan and our scorer Naga. Hope you enjoyed our coverage and until the start of the Indian Premier League, goodbye and stay safe.
Dwayne Bravo | Winning captain: I want to commend my team without whom this would not have been possible. This is for the fans, they have come out in numbers and they are our 12th man. Belief. And giving people opportunity, backing people to perform. The first session I had with Drakes I told him you are not an emerging player, you are one of my main players and this is your tournament. Naming Lewis as the vice-captain gave him the responsibility. I came here to see if I can do something different and have managed to achieve it. This one will be special as it is a new franchise, out of my comfort zone, coming here and not knowing what to expect, it should be in the top three. I know what it means for some of the guys who have been here from the start. I always wanted to play together with the Universe Boss in the CPL and here we are winning the trophy together. We kept believing even after losing wickets, we took the game deep and that's the reason we went on to win. It was a great team effort. Credit to Simon (Helmot) as well, it is our second trophy together and I love playing for him. This was a very good tournament, you didn't know who would be in the top four till the final league game and even the final it went down the wire. People will expect more from the CPL next year.
Andre Fletcher | Losing captain: It is a bit hurtful. The guys played well and I cannot fault them. We fought well and right to the end. Drakes played really well and won them the game. The execution I believe, that 19th over if we could have tucked up Drakes and left few more for the final over. For me it is never over till the fat lady sings, the two words I used today was stay calm and humility. We stayed calm till the end and we were humble. Unfortunate that we couldn't cross the hurdle. I was very confident of defending in the final over, that shot Drakes hit was a good shot and Williams didn't do much wrong there. I know they are disappointed, but we have to keep the faith. Ever since CPL started we were struggling, we had come to be known as the punching bag, and though we didn't win this year, we will be back.
Roston Chase | Player of the Tournament: Feeling good that I created history. Thankful for it. My advice to them (youngsters) would be to know your strength and don't rush, you do have more time than you think in this format of the game as well. Just know your cricket and take your time. For me the camaraderie was good as we had very little time to gel, our power-play batting was good, bowling in the power-play early in the tournament; those are the three things we did well in the tournament.
Evin Lewis | Award for most sixes - 38: Pretty simple. Keep your shape and look at the ball till the last moment. I know I have the ability to hit the sixes and backed my ability. Getting off to a good start and hitting the sixes, these guys kept supporting me.
Dominic Drakes | Player of the Match: I just tried to keep my nerve and things worked in my favour. There was no run there (on refusing the 3rd run in the final over). I think he (father and former cricketer Vasbert Drakes) was more nervous than me. Now I can go home and tell him I won the game. I believe he has played a big part. He was always there (on coach Simon Helmot). Dwayne Bravo gives us a lot of confidence and tells us to go and play freely. Being clear in the back end always helps and holding your nerve is important. Also having faith in your team mates. (*gets emotional*) I am just happy for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots as this is their first (CPL) trophy. Everyone played their part (when asked about the biggest influential performance) .
Spare a thought for Saint Lucia Kings. That's two finals in a row they have lost and the expression on some of the players told the story. They were distraught and crestfallen. The game was in their hands a few times; first Keemo Paul got them to a competitive total on a two-paced surface, then they sent back the dangerous pair of Gayle and Lewis cheaply, even got rid of the well-set Joshua da Silva and Rutherford in successive overs, but could not handle the positivity brought to the crease by Drakes. It is another season so-near-yet-so-far for them. But they are getting closer and hopefully will take learnings from this game into the next edition.
Fabian Allen: I knew it was going to happen. Just backed myself. Everyone was shaking. I said in the meeting that we have the belief and that's what happened.
Simon Helmot | Coach, St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots - I am so proud (of the team), it has been such an unbelievable effort, to get the tournament going, in this Covid atmosphere, a lot has been done to get the tournament running (on the backroom staff who worked hard to deliver the tournament). He's the future for West Indies cricket (on Dominic Drakes), I love watching him, he's one of the upcoming talents. We were a batsmen short today, but the way he went out and played, some of his shots and the maturity he showed, it was unbelievable
Joshua Da Silva: Words can't describe. To see my best friend (Drakes) hit the winnings runs was fantastic. The support we have had here has been phenomenal. He (Dwayne Bravo) is the God, can't ask for anything more, best in the business.
Dominic Drakes - I just turned the tide. I have been playing (in this tournament) for three years, but this was my first real chance this season. This isn't just for me, this is for (Dwayne) Bravo, this is for the team. I just wanted to do it for the team, I wanted to serve the purpose (for which I was selected). I had promised to give him the jersey - Thank you father (Vasbert Drakes, the former West Indies international), this is for you
14:50 Local Time, 18:50 GMT, 00:20 IST: What a thriller! This game has lived up to the expectations of what a final should be. The game ebbed and flowed from one team to the other and in the end we have a new CPL champion. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots have won the Battle of Saints. Gayle went in the first over, Lewis didn't last long either but young Joshua da Silva steadied the innings along with Rutherford, adding a 45-run stand. However, both went in successive overs and left the lower order with a lot to do, that's where Drakes stepped up. He was positive right from ball one and even though he lost his skipper, Allen came in to give him support and together the pair took the Patriots on the cusp of victory. Further drama unfolded as the Kings picked up two wickets in the penultimate over and Williams started the final over well, but a decisive blow on the 5th ball ensured that the Patriots inched closer to the trophy.
SNP: 160-7 after 20 overs
19.6 Kesrick Williams to Drakes, 1 run, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots are the CPL2021 Champions. Look at them go. Drakes removes his helmet and goes off on a run as soon as he completes the single. They are all over him and he runs towards the manual scoreboard without his jersey, throws it to someone. "He promised one of the scoreboard operators before the game and has kept his promise," informs Ian Bishop on air. Coming to the ball: It was a low full toss and Drakes jams it towards short fine, Shah races to the other end and the celebrations start
1 off 1. Williams is on his haunches thinking. Fletcher is making a few field changes. Everyone is in to save the single. Here we go..
19.5 Kesrick Williams to Drakes, FOUR, the scores are level. They are celebrating in the Patriots dugout. But the match ain't over. Williams missed the yorker by a couple of inches and that is enough, Drakes gets underneath it and thumps it over extra cover. He struck it so well that the ball almost went the distance, needed the TV umpire to check and make the decision
19.4 Kesrick Williams to Drakes, 2 runs, very full delivery outside off, Drakes manages to squeeze the drive through extra cover, the call was for two and Shah responds, the throw goes over Williams but the pair don't take the extra run. Drakes wants to stay on strike.. 5 off 2
19.3 Kesrick Williams to Drakes, no run, this is excellent bowling from Williams. He knows what he's doing. He is going full and at Drakes' pads, not much the left hander can do there, misses the flick and wears it on the pad. 7 off 3
19.2 Kesrick Williams to Naseem Shah, 1 run, dipping full toss and Shah swings as hard as possible, but just clears mid-wicket and the fielder in the deep keeps it to a single. Over to Drakes again.. 7 off 4
19.1 Kesrick Williams to Drakes, 1 run, low full toss and Drakes squirts an inside edge through his legs, the ball rolls backward of square on the leg-side and this time Shah was reluctant to take the single, but he manages to cross over. 8 off 5
9 off 6. Williams given the final over. He had a long chat with his skipper. Drakes will be the man for the Patriots. He even denied the single off the last ball. There are two short third mans in place. All three results still possible. So, buckle up folks as we go one last time in CPL 2021..
