Delhi Capitals vs Kolkata Knight Riders, Qualifier 2
Kolkata Knight Riders won by 3 wkts
KKR have a 100 percent record in an IPL final. CSK's win percentage is 37.5 in an IPL final. But KKR has featured in 2 finals and CSK's 9th appearance awaits them. Needless to say, the nerves that jangle first will find it hard to cross the line. And then there will be two WC winning captains who know how to soak in the pressure. As for today, DC much like RCB two days back will come back may be with a fresh squad to target their first IPL triumph. They came the closest last season and after topping the table this season, it seemed they will scale the distance. But then they were tripped twice. CSK and now KKR got the better of them. Big games and DC somehow don their dwarf self to be overpowered. Enough said. Time to rest! We are drained. Lock, stock and barrel! This cliffhanger was served to you by our team of Vineeth Anantharaman, Pradeep Krishnamurthy, Abhinand Raghavendran and Mukesh. This is Kumar Abhisekh Das signing off!
Venkatesh Iyer, Man of the Match: I am doing what has been asked of me. I am very happy that we ended on the winning side. There is no difference. I came out and played the way I want to play. I am grateful to the management. It is a wonderful place to come and play. I think in the past couple of games, I have been trying to restrict myself a bit as I wanted to stay till the end. But then I thought it is not me. I was losing out on the present trying to be a bit conservative. Gill is an extremely wonderful strokeplayer and we complement each other. Heard the news (about being asked to stay back in the Indian bio-bubble for the T20 WC) this morning, but my entire focus was on tonight's game.
Eoin Morgan, KKR skipper: We will dissect what happened in the last four overs. The openers gave us a great platform. But we have won and we are in the finals. We are delighted to get over the line. We are in the entertainment business and need to play some entertaining cricket. Six off 2 and you would say the odds are for the bowling side. But Tripathi has done it for us so many times. The guys coming in feel free to express themselves. The backroom staff have created an excellent atmosphere for that to happen. With the squad we have, we had huge expectations. Our coach BMac saw Iyer and had tracked his progress. Iyer seems to be batting on a different wicket. Anything can happen in a final!
Teams finishing in top two and not making final since 2011:
Delhi Daredevils in 2012
Gujarat Lions in 2016
Delhi Capitals in 2021
** KKR are the second side to reach IPL finals since 2011 after finishing fourth in the points table after CSK did so in 2012. In both seasons, the final was played between CSK and KKR.
Rahul Tripathi: It feels great. The win for the team was very important. We had one or two tough overs and I never thought it would go so deep. Glad we won the game. Rabada bowled the 18th over really well, but I knew that I had to just connect one. The plan was to take a two if there was a possibility. If it was two, we were running, otherwise it was going to be me. It was difficult to straightaway get singles and boundaries for the new batsmen. It was keeping low and it was difficult to hit. I believed in myself and knew it was just one hit away. It has been a great journey for us after the first phase. We believed in ourselves and the approach given by Eoin and the coach helped us with the positive approach.
Rishabh Pant (who is very emotional) - I don't have words to express at the moment, can't tell anything. We just kept believing, tried to stay in the game as long as possible. The bowlers nearly pulled it back, but it's unfortunate that it didn't go our way. They bowled very well in the middle-overs, we got stuck and couldn't rotate strike. Delhi Capitals are known to be positive and hopefully we'll come back better next season. We played really good cricket, yes, there will be ups and downs, but we'll stay positive, be there for each other, care for each other and hopefully we'll come back better next season.Â
21:47 Local Time, 17:47 GMT, 23:17 IST: Oh this beating heart! This fascinating game! The fans of KKR and DC were set about on a random oscillating pendulum. But KKR from being prospective wooden spooners have a chance to write their name in gold. Only 4 points from 7 games, they move to the second leg and they have turned it around and how! Delhi fans and players ate high on emotions. Shaw was in tears. Had to be picked up. DC had agony in the finale in 2020 and have had a couple of shots at ignominy in 2021 despite topping the table. It looked like an easy chase for 80 percent of the chase till a cluster of wickets in the last two three overs turned the game upside down. From needing 11 off 3 overs to needing 6 off 2, KKR almost shot themselves in the foot. But then Tripathi pulled out one last trick and smoked it over long-off to ensure KKR fans will sleep peacefully tonight.
19.5Ashwin to Tripathi, SIX, feed him a rosagulla! Give him dozens I say. KKR win it by three wickets to book a berth in the finale. The city of joy has been handed over bouts of delirium by this lad. Tripathi, you beauty! That was flattish outside off and Tripathi has smoked it over long-off. KKR vs CSK, 15th October, Dubai
Lockie Ferguson, right handed bat, comes to the crease
19.4Ashwin to Narine, out Caught by Axar!! Kedar Jadhav would be a proud man! Ashwin delivers that slow, bowls it with a low base and asks Narine to do the power hitting. Narine responds with a dance but only toe-ends it for the man at long-off to take it. Ashwin is on a hat-trick. 6 needed off 2 balls. Can KKR snatch defeat? Narine c Axar b Ashwin 0(1)
Ashwin to Narine, THATS OUT!! Caught!!
Sunil Narine, left handed bat, comes to the crease
19.3 Ashwin to Shakib, out Lbw!! That is gone! The scoop doesn't come off! Ashwin almost collides into the batter unable to hide his glee. And KKR have hit a own-tailored road block. That ball kept rotating like a top till it landed and then skidded on to miss the scoop from Shakib. The umpire caved in rightly to the loud appeal. KKR's camp is tensed. I just can't imagine it. That scoop helped the batter win it for his team a couple of days back but not today. Shakib lbw b Ashwin 0(2)
Ashwin to Shakib, THATS OUT!! Lbw!!
19.2 Ashwin to Shakib, no run, oh Ashwin! That was flatter from a very low base. Shakib misses the slog sweep and the ball dies down right under his nose
19.1Ashwin to Tripathi, 1 run, uh oh! Tripathi has missed out here. That was dropped short and Tripathi has flung that away to long-on for a single. Smith came charging in and hauled the throw at the batter's end. KKR need 6 now off 5 balls
Ravichandran Ashwin [3.0-0-20-0] is back into the attack
Shakib Al Hasan, left handed bat, comes to the crease
Last over! 7 needed. Ashwin to bowl. Pheww!
KKR: 129-5 after 19 overs
18.6 Nortje to Morgan, out Bowled!! Goodness gracious! DC are making a match out of this. Humble pies are on the bake shelf it seems. That was a length delivery outside off, Morgan looks for a slog and gets a thick inside edge for the ball to rattle into the sticks. Huge wicket for DC as Nortje has done a terrific job. And Morgan's dry run continues. Morgan b Nortje 0(3)
