Chepauk Super Gillies vs Nellai Royal Kings, 1st Match
Match tied (Nellai Royal Kings won the super over)
So we wrap that up here. Hopefully the rest of the TNPL is as thrilling as tonight's game. If that is the case, then that will be a treat for everyone. We will be back with more work from this tournament and the others. In the meantime, sleep tight and be well. Take care. See you soon.
Baba Indrajith: This is the perfect 1st game for everybody, for the fans. that was an exciting game. Definitely not the pitch, we have to put our hands up and say we did not bat well in the powerplay. Credit goes to Sanjay and Suryaprakash, honestly we did not expect us to reach that total from 27/3 so all credit to the both of them. We had spoken previously that nobody should take an advantage. If in the Super Over with one needed, had we taken advantage that would've been unfair. I think Apar [Aparajith] saw Jagadeesan doing that the previous ball and when he went out of his crease, he ran him out. And everyone knows that the rules have changed and it's clearly now mentioned that it's a run-out and not a Mankad so it's within the rules. I think that was a soft indication [on Aparajith not delivering the ball just before he Mankaded Jagadeesan]. When you are playng against a top side, you have to bring your A-game, they can field two elevens, that's how strong they are, so that feels nice to beat them.
Sanjay Yadav: Itâs very close. They played really well. We have to appreciate them. At final we fight and won. Iâm playing from, I think this is my 6th year. Every match we gain experience. Playing for 5 years, we should perform well. All the contributions in the bowling department has been nice and itâs happy to win. I try to finish the game. I take that till the end, I know I can hit big shots, but if I begin and end well, that will be nice for the team.
Sanjay Yadav is the Player of the Match.
Kaushik Gandhi: that was up and down, we as players enjoyed the game. The rub of the green did not go our way. Overall no regrets. It's not anything we want to do obviously [on starting every year on the losing note]. Donât know whether to call that a nice omen, the tournament runs fast, itâs important to get momentum and we need to work on our areas for the next game which comes quickly. To begin with I was happy at how I played but that does not count for anything as we did not win. I respect whatever they did, that definitely wonât happen under my leadership . There is no point complaing or cribbing about it, itâs what that is. We have to stay inside the ground from the next game.
23:15 Local Time, 17:45 GMT, 23:15 IST: First game of TNPL 2022 and we have had a Super Over finish. What else could you ask for, to kickstart the tournament. Coming back to the original chase, there was drama when Aparajith Mankaded Jagadeesan to set the temperatures soaring. CSG slipped to 69/3 soon but their skipper Kaushik Gandhi kept the chase going with his attacking 64. His dismissal turned the game but the finisher Harish Kumar unfurled some big hits and with 15 needed off the final over bowled by Athisayaraj Davidson, he kept the strike and got that the game to a Super Over with a four off the final ball. In the Super Over, Davidson did superbly to keep that to 9 despite a last-ball six. Warrier had the task of defending 9 but he looked rusty after not bowling for a couple of hours and gave far a couple of wides apart from an outside-edge four. With just one needed, Warrier got Indrajith but Ajitesh kept his nerve to take Nellai home. Superb game to begin this year's edition. Do stay tuned for the presentation...
Ball 5: Sandeep Warrier to Ajitesh, 1 run. Nellai win! On a nice length and angled in, defended to the right of Warrier and they scamper across. What a finish as the winning Nellai team run onto the field and the fireworks go off
If CSG get a wicket now, then the teams will share points. No multiple Super Overs here.
Ball 4: Sandeep Warrier to Indrajith, OUT, caught by Kaushik Gandhi. A twist. Full on off, Indrajith leading-edges the flick and looks the CSG skipper at cover. Went straight to him. Still 1 needed off 2 balls and the debutant comes in. Indrajith c Kaushik Gandhi b Warrier 0(1)
The fielders in. Only deep square leg back? A ring field on the off-side. Long-on back. Square leg comes in.
Ball 3: Sandeep Warrier to Indrajith, wide. Dug in short, but too high and left alone. Nellai take the wide. Just 1 needed off 3 balls
Another chat between Gandhi, Sonu and Warrier. Tough ask now for CSG. They need a wicket.
Ball 3: Sandeep Warrier to Sanjay Yadav, 1 run. Length ball across Sanjay, who pushes calmly wide of point and takes the run on offer. 2 needed off 3 balls
Gandhi is talking to Warrier as one more fielder joins in to have a chat. No change in the field for now. So the plan is to still bowl the wide yorker. Meanwhile Ajitesh will be the third batter if a wicket falls
Ball 2: Sandeep Warrier to Sanjay Yadav, FOUR runs! Thick outside-edge and that flies over fewer third man. Wide length ball and Sanjay goes hard on the swing. Just the three needed now off the next four balls
Ball 1: Sandeep Warrier to Sanjay Yadav, 2 runs. Full outside off, drilled straight and long-off comes around, dives and keeps that to two
Ball 1: Sandeep Warrier to Sanjay Yadav, wide. Way outside off and that's a poor begin from Warrier
Backward point is in and Warrier runs in but pulls out. Maybe he lost his run-up.
So 10 to win for Nellai. Badani has his team in a huddle and he is doing the talking. The others listen intently with rapt attention. For CSG, Sandeep Warrier will bowl. He is doing his bowl-downs. The batters for Nellai - Sanjay Yadav and Indrajith the men.
Ball 6: Athisayaraj Davidson to Jagadeesan, SIX runs, look at Jagadeesan. He is pumped. Too predictable from Athisayaraj Davidson and the slower delivery on a length is flat-batted powerfully over long-off. Hit flat and all the way. A great end to the Super Over for CSG and Jagadeesan is pumped. They have 9 on the board.
