Morris, Olivier added to squad for final two Australia Tests

Cricket news - Morris, Olivier added to squad for final two Australia Tests

All-rounder Chris Morris and fast bowler Duanne Olivier have been added to South Africa's Test squad for the two remaining Tests against Australia. The two new additions take the squad size to 17, although Cricket South Africa plan to release those not playing a part in the Cape Town Test to play for their franchises in the domestic Sunfoil Series.

Squad: Faf du Plessis (c), Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Theunis de Bruyn, AB de Villiers, Dean Elgar, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Willem Mulder, Lungisani Ngidi, Duanne Olivier, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada.

The decision to include Olivier and Morris is a conscious move by the selectors to bolster the fast-bowling resources, which have taken a hit following the suspension to Kagiso Rabada. Rabada's participation at Newlands is subject to the results of his appeal against the Level 2 charge obtained in Port Elizabeth.

Meanwhile, Dale Steyn continues to remain out of the squad having not played a competitive game since picking up a heel injury during the New Year's Test against India at Cape Town.

"Circumstances have forced us to name a large squad at this stage so that we can cover all possible options," commented CSA National Selection Panel Convener Linda Zondi. "Once we have finalised our playing XI, we will release players to their franchises for the final round of the Sunfoil Series.

"We have retained the 15 players who produced an excellent performance to level the Test Series in Port Elizabeth. Olivier was the pick of our bowlers for South Africa A in their tour match against Australia while Morris has been in excellent form in domestic cricket, taking four wickets in an innings and making more than 150 runs, including a century, for the Titans in the Sunfoil Series against the league-leading Warriors," concluded Zondi.

Morris and Olivier haven't played Test cricket in 2018 as yet. While Morris was in the squad for the India Tests, he failed to make it to the playing eleven in any of the three games. His last appearance in the South African whites came during against at The Oval in July 2017. Olivier featured in the home series against Bangladesh and impressed in a tour game against the visiting Australians ahead of the ongoing series, claiming 4 for 74 at Benoni.

The four-match Test series is locked 1-1, with the two remaining games scheduled to be played at Cape Town and Johannesburg.
