South Africa, Windies split points after washed-out game
Cricket news - South Africa, Windies split points after washed-out game
South Africa's search for that elusive maiden ODI series win in West Indies was delayed by persistent rain as the second ODI had to be called off in Barbados on Wednesday (September 19). Consequently, both teams split the two IWC points on offer while the visitors now have an unassailable 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Persistent torrential rain had already delayed the start of play, reducing the second match of their current round of ICC Women's ODI Championship to a 43-overs-a-side-affair. Another five overs per side were cut down after rain interrupted play again, 10 overs into the innings of South Africa, who were put in to bat first.
South Africa had posted a solid 177/8 from their 38 overs, riding on the back of skipper Dane van Niekerk's 66-ball 53. Her 67-run stand for the sixth-wicket with vice-captain Chloe Tryon (37 off 44 balls), pulled the team out of trouble after they found themselves reeling at 85 for 4 in 22nd over. With figures of 3 for 29, Deandra Dottin was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts as she sent back Sune Luus (20) and Lizelle Lee (22) at the top of the order and then Marizanne Kapp (5) in the middle.
However, the rain returned once again, soon after South Africa's innings. With the chances of resumption looking bleak with every passing minute, the umpires called off the game.
The hosts will look to level the three-match series in the third and final ODI on Saturday, while South Africa would want nothing less than a win that will give them their first bilateral series win in the Caribbean.
Brief scores: South Africa Women 177/8 in 38 overs (Dane van Niekerk 53, Chloe Tyron 37; Deandra Dottin 3-29) vs West Indies Women - No result
