Shastri hopeful of a speedy return for Prithvi Shaw

Cricket news - Shastri hopeful of a speedy return for Prithvi Shaw

India are hoping to avail the batting services of Prithvi Shaw for Melbourne's Boxing Day Test of the ongoing Test series against Australia. The teenaged opener was ruled out of the series opener in Adelaide after injuring his ankle in the tour game against Cricket Australia XI.

Shaw is out of the crutches that he needed for his general mobility but was pictured with a heavy strapping on his leg ahead of the toss on the opening day of the series. While the second Test at Perth, starting December 14, may come a little too quickly in his recovery path, head coach Ravi Shastri believes the young opener is already ahead of schedule in his rehab process.

"It was heartbreaking to see him go down," Shastri told SEN Radio on Wednesday (December 5). "But the good thing is he's recovering quickly. He's already started walking. It was really unfortunate. In fact, we all were looking forward for him to play. It's always exciting when you have an 18-year-old [19] kid who has come up the ranks, who has got runs in all formats for the game when he's played back home."

Shaw scored a century on his Test debut in Rajkot against Windies in October and was earmarked as the first choice opener for the Australia tour. His untimely injury forced India to revert to the pair of Murali Vijay and KL Rahul, a move that began on an ominous note in Adelaide with the two collectively scoring 13 runs in the first innings. India haven't called for a backup opening option with Shastri hopeful of a speedy return from Shaw.

"I would imagine so [if he'll be fit before the third Test] but you never know. Hopefully if we can get him to run a bit by the weekend, that's really good signs. With youth on his side there might just be a case where he might recover quicker. We'll make a call as and when we get closer to Perth."
