Yasir Shah's journey to 200 Test wickets
Cricket news - Yasir Shah's journey to 200 Test wickets
Yasir Shah broke a long-standing record in the 141-year-old history of Test cricket by becoming the quickest to 200 wickets. He achieved the milestone trapping the nightwatchman William Somerville leg-before in the ongoing third Test in Abu Dhabi. The record was previously held by Australian leg spinner Clarrie Grimmett, who incidentally was the first bowler to the 200-wicket milestone. Grimmett achieved the milestone against South Africa at the Old Wanderers in February 1936.
DEBUT: vs Australia, Dubai, October 2014
Yasir replaced Pakistan's best bowler at that point of time, Saeed Ajmal, who was banned from bowling in international cricket following ICC's crackdown on illegal bowling actions. In a relatively high-scoring Test match, he picked up seven wickets including 4/50 in the second dig as Pakistan won by a mammoth 221 runs. Maiden five-fer soon followed against New Zealand in Dubai in his fourth Test as he picked 5/79 in the second innings.
50th WICKET: vs Sri Lanka, Colombo PSS, June 2015
Yasir continued his good form in Sri Lanka, taking 24 wickets in the three-Test series as Pakistan won the series 2-1. He was adjudicated Man of the Series. Only Shane Warne - 26 wickets in 2004 - has taken more wickets in a series among visiting bowlers in Sri Lanka.
He made his first overseas tour next year to England and struck gold taking 10/141 in the first Test at Lord's as Pakistan posted a memorable win. He remains the only Asian bowler till date to pick a ten-wicket haul at the 'Home of Cricket'. He finished the series with a five-fer at the Oval and his 19 wickets in the series is the most by a Pakistan spinner in a series in England.
100th WICKET: vs Windies, Dubai, October 2016
Yasir picked his 100th wicket against Windies in the first Test of the series when he dismissed Miguel Cummins en route to another five-fer. He was awarded Man of the Series for his 21 wickets in the series.
A low followed during his maiden tour to Australia and New Zealand where he picked up just eight wickets from four games and was dropped for the only time in his career in New Zealand.
He hit the straps soon after against his favourite opponents Windies in the Caribbean. He picked five-fers in each of the three Tests and his 25 wickets is the joint-most by an Asian bowler in a series of three or fewer Tests outside the sub-continent. For his efforts, he won his third Man of the Match series award.
150th WICKET: vs SL, Abu Dhabi, September 2017
Yasir continued his merry ways tormenting Sri Lankan batsman in the UAE, picking 16 wickets in the two-Test series. Despite this, Pakistan lost their first series in the UAE after making it their home in 2010. The five-fers in the Test matches made him the first spinner and fourth bowler overall to pick five-wicket hauls in five or more consecutive Tests.
In the second Test of the ongoing series against New Zealand, he picked up 14/184 making it the second-best figures for Pakistan in Tests after Imran Khan's 14/116 against Sri Lanka in Lahore in 1982. On the third day of the Test, he picked up ten wickets in the day's play making him the first ever Pakistan bowler to do so and first by any bowler since Anil Kumble in Delhi in 1999.
200th WICKET: vs NZ, Abu Dhabi, December 2018
Yasir has been on a roll in the ongoing rubber against New Zealand with 27 wickets and counting making it the most for a bowler in a series in the UAE. Next on his checklist will be becoming fastest to 250 wickets and he has 11 Tests at his disposal to overthrow Ravichandran Ashwin from the top of the list.
