Cricket news - Maxwell batting in perfect position: Langer

"When Maxi can come in and put the finishing touches on like he does, for me it's the perfect position."

There was a lot of hoopla about Glen Maxwell's batting as low as No. 7, but in the subsequent period, his aggressive 37-ball 48 in the second ODI in Adelaide, Australia coach Justin Langer has once again its conviction that the batting position is the "perfect location" for the all-rounder.

"Maxy is a very important part of our team, if we win the world Cup," Langer said after Australia's six-wicket loss in Adelaide on Tuesday (15. January). "I think, frankly, that, in spite of the debate, [No. 7], is his best spot in our team for us at the moment, and we stress it in (earlier) every now and then, when we need a small cameo."

Long acknowledged that Australia have tried, different things with regard to batting positions over the last couple of months, and as the Maxwell-success, as something of a beginning.

"We have not had the success that we want, and we try different things," he said. "And for me, Maxi, he's probably the best fielder in the world, we love it, it's contagious, his energy. He was captain of the (Melbourne) stars, he has good leadership qualities as well. So if he can come in and do the final touches, how he makes it, it is always a nervous time for opposition (if) you still, you know, you have a Glenn Maxwell or a Mike Hussey comes in down to seven.

"I remember the days when Michael Clarke with the bat, seven and Michael Hussey used to the bat, said of seven," Long. "I used to muck around with Huss, and say: 'dude, you have the best job in the world, you never asked, you pay a fortune, but you will never be asked, because the squad is so good to be running. But Maxi can come in and do the final touches, as it sounds, for me it is the perfect position."

Long also said that his inexperienced team to learn a lot from the defeat in the second ODI, and hailed the performances of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni, the latter to re-form with a half century.

"It's an incredible experience for our team against India. To watch, Virat, and then MS is going to do what he did, in the end, it is simply treated only a great tutorial for our young. Class always comes to the top, so we have to respect that. The way that Virat and MS batted today - you hate to lose, but if you see that it is amazing and it is the reason why they are so great players," Long said. "We get great experience, and at major tournaments like the world Cup (starting in the UK in June of next year), I like to see our guys under pressure, as they were tonight.

"We are much the better for the experience, and it is still one-all in the series, so that means it is alive and well."

Shaun Marsh scored his seventh ODI hundred, and Long was all praise for him, and as he said is a big part of Australia's world Cup plan, also with 35. He also defended Aaron Finch's poor form at the top, and as I said, Australia's ODI captain will find a way to adapt his game for the different formats, well, he plays all of them. "He turns into a large one-day international player," Long Marsh said. "I'm really proud of the way (he said not) be chosen for the next Test series against Sri Lanka. With this pressure, a lot of guys may shrink, but he didn't, he stood upright. He works really hard, he had a couple of good innings now. I'm really proud of Shaun, he will be a big part of our world Cup campaign.

"There aren't many players who play all three forms of the game now," Long Finch said. "This is completely new territory for him. He plays all three forms of the game, he is also the captain of the white-ball teams that play Test cricket. He will not be far off. If he runs, he gets hundreds. He works so hard, he just needs a few breaks. Every now and then you need a little break, and he will be gone."
