Cricket news - In Hardik's absence, India seek to find missing piece of bowling puzzle
During the recently completed ODI series in Australia, India, only two moments of visible discomfort. The first was in Sydney, reduced to 4 for 3 in the fourth had the visitors on the reconstruction of the entire innings.
The other instance happened in Sydney and Adelaide, with Virat Kohli struggled for options to complete the 50 overs. In the case of the SCG, Khaleel Ahmed never really gained any rhythm as he was back in Australia the shore to a distance of six weeks. At the Adelaide Oval, Mohammed Siraj found conditions difficult debut to hand on his ODI.
With Ambati Rayudu bowling just two overs at the SCG, before his action was suspicious, and Kedar Jadhav, sit these two matches, India struggled with their fifth bowler's quota. Obviously, the captain is missing a certain Person.
"If it's an all-rounder who can chip in (in) with a few overs of seam-up, then you may not (other) guy bowling 140 (km/h) as the third (seamer), together with two fast bowlers. As long as you can a all-rounder in the side, you still have a good balance around your bowling line-up. But if you don't start an all-rounder, then your situation is comes three fast bowlers," said Kohli, ahead of the first ODI against new Zealand at McLean Park.
The last time Kohli fielded three pacers (prior to the Australian tour) with all the regularity was during the 2017 Champions Trophy. India started the tournament in Birmingham against Pakistan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav, next to Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja. After a shock loss to Sri Lanka, the third pacer (read Umesh) was abandoned. Play with only two full-time pacers has been a recurring trend thereafter.
There are only two deviations from the tried-and-tested method as. The first, a "one-off" instance was in Sri Lanka (September 2017), with Shardul Thakur played as the third seamer. And the second, it started with Pandya injuries in the Asia Cup to Adelaide ODI, where he was absent against Australia due to the current suspension; a run with eight hits. In all, since September 2017, with India, only force played nine games without Pandya, you have to to look for a third full-time seamer.
The skipper found a solution for the series " finale in Melbourne, passing Vijay Shankar made his first ODI cap, and bring in Jadhav to Rayudu costs. They worked to a large extent; Shankar Jadhav together for figures of 0-28, as they rolled off eight rounds in tandem, before the main-Spinner came on. In a way, this tactic is the 'ideal batting line-up, Kohli disturbed to be configured, for the first two ODIs Rayudu to MS Dhoni, on five, with Dinesh Karthik follows six.
What about India, the ideal bowling combination?
The above-mentioned period - from September 2017 to September 2018 - where India played only two full-time-pacers - coincided with the rise of the Pandya as an integral part of India's ODI bowling plans.
Understanding of the importance of his role, Pandya slow its speed, out worked, the delicate balance between bowling in sub-continental influenced conditions, and in overseas, while also developing a variant of (slower ball). In fact, it was only during the summer of 2018, when Pandya brought out a slower yorker, not nearly as perfect as Bumrah's. Before the T20I series in England, he worked hard on it, with Rohit Sharma in the nets in Manchester, and used it sparingly in the limited-overs cricket.
Even so, his progression as an all-rounder has been in stages, and reflects on how Kohli has used him in ODI cricket. Sample this. In 41 ODI innings, Pandya has only bowled a full spell of ten rounds on 11 occasions. On three other occasions, he has cut bowled his full quota of laps in the rain-games (apart from one, in which he bowled four overs in a 21-over game), the 31.7 percent, translating into approximately Pandya completed his spell in ODIs, only three times in all ten innings.
This makes a strong argument in favour of Kohli, no more than five bowling options at his disposal. And it is seen in 27 ODIs with Pandya has bowled six or more overs but not yet completed his spell. Part-time employees, including Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Shreyas Iyer, Jadhav and Kohli himself, have bowled at least one over in 16 of these 27 instances. This is a total of 56 rounds among them - an average of 3.5-overs for part-time workers, if Pandya has failed his quota of ten overs.
In other words, two pacers, two spinners, one all rounder and a part-timer form the rough template, like India, have operated in the ODI arena, since 2017. "Three pacers (didn't happen sooner, or in the Asia Cup) each time, if Pandya was available. If you see that the strongest teams in the world have two all-rounders at least. Some pages have three. This gives you a lot of bowling options. Unless someone like Shankar did not play, or Pandya does not play, then the three-pacer combination makes sense," said Kohli.
At the time of writing, the Indian skipper, the same combination is ready for picking, worked at the MCG last Friday. In contrast to Australia, although new Zealand have a number of all-rounders, even in the absence of the injured James Neesham, you have Colin de Grand Homme, Colin Munro and Mitchell Santner to choose from, all of them ready to audition for the world Cup.
It represents a stark contrast to India's current plight. You have to play depending on Shankar, not the first choice, option, play to beat him balance in their eleven. Meanwhile, Pandya is still waiting for an investigation and ruling on his suspension. It is time to question the BCCI and the COA on this delay, before it costs in India, a very important world Cup preparation?
