Cricket news - Kurtis Patterson, Jhye Richardson to debut at Gabba

Kurtis Patterson scored two hundreds in the practice match against Sri Lanka

Kurtis Patterson and Jhye Richardson will take her debut as Australia and Sri Lanka in the day-night Test at the Gabba from Thursday (January 24). Tim Paine announced the line-up a day before the game, with Pucovski, Matthew Renshaw and Peter Siddle not part of the playing eleven.

Patterson, who has a remarkable century in the Sheffield Shield debut in 2011 at the age of 18, received a late call-up to the national team, after back-to-back unbeaten tons (157* and 102*) in the practice match against Sri Lanka. The southpaw from New South Wales scored 428 runs this season, the shield includes a hundred and three fifties in six games.

Australia playing XI: Marcus Harris, Joe Burns, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis head, Kurtis Patterson, Tim Paine (c & wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Jhye Richardson, Nathan Lyon

Richardson, who had an impressive outing against India in the recently concluded ODI series, was chosen in the playing XI ahead of the more experienced Siddle in Josh Hazlewood's absence. The 22-year-old pacer from Western Australia is the leading wicket-taker for his domestic team this season - picking 27 wickets in 10 innings at an impressive average of 19.03. The usual troika of the NSW bowlers - Starc, Cummins and Lyon - the complete four-man bowling attack, with Marnus Labuschagne of the all-round option.

To open Joe Burns is set, the batting, along with Marcus Harris, pushing Usman Khawaja and Labuschagne below, is a place where you can hit the New Year's Test against India in Sydney. Burns, who last played a Test in April 2018, is trumped by his Queensland team-mate Renshaw, the opening slot. The right-hander is to accumulate the highest run-getter for Queensland in this year, the shield 472 runs at an average of 47.20. But he could not convert any of his four fifties in a century in Australia, a great deal of worry in the batting Department.
