Cricket news - Bangladesh bring back Sabbir, Taskin for NZ ODIs

Sabbir's international ban has been reduced by one month.

According to the Bangladesh Cricket Board, reduced his international ban, Sabbir Rahman was in the 15-member squad for the upcoming ODI series against new Zealand. The squad announcement also marks the comeback of Pacer Taskin Ahmed, while Naeem Hasan, uncovered in the 50-over format, has been called up as back-up for Mehedy Hasan.

Sabbir was included to run in spite of a lukewarm in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League, where his only notable performance in six games is a knock of 85 against ODI skipper Mashrafe Mortaza ' a-side. However, Sabbir, the topic of conversation during the press to announce a conference of the national selectors, the new Zealand-bound ODI squad.

The BCB had struck Sabbir with a six-month ban from international cricket in September 2018 for his repeated off-field issues, the latest social networking fiasco, where he allegedly abused and threatened a fan on Facebook. To be expected, after the sanction of Sabbir was to have to sit out of the action until the end of February. However, chief selector Minhajul Abedin cleared the air to say that he only hinted at after the disciplinary Committee that his ban had been reduced from a month, while Mortaza remained adamant Sabbir inclusion in the selection.

"We were informed by the disciplinary Commission, that he is available [for selection] and after we got the distance we have him in the squad. He is, as of January 31, the Committee reduced his ban to a month," Minhajul told reporters on Wednesday (23. January).

"Let me make it clear, one thing about the Sabbir. He was included due to the strong insistence of the captain [Mortaza]. He asked firmly to us, him included, and we have agreed to be added with the captain," Abedin.

"The team want someone in the squad who can bat in the lower order with the ability to deal with the pacers. We have him holding the new Zealand tour and the world Cup in the back of the head. Let's see what he can do. The captain of the team, and we are also confident about him."

Pace bowler Taskin, last played an ODI in 2017, before deleting it due to lack of form and injury problems, got back to his place in both ODI and Test squads. Taskin was show in the national team after his consolation, while in Bangladesh, South Africa tour back in 2017. He was recalled in the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka in 2018, but he could not impress.

Taskin has a great run in the current season of the BPL for Sylhet Sixers, taken 14 wickets in seven games so far, which paved way for his return to the national team. "Taskin suffered from injuries, but he was under our rehabilitation program. We used to get him enough [for him] to go back to his old form. He was in the BPL, and that is how he came back in contention," says Abedin. "Taskin bowl at express pace, and this is something we as before, including him, as this ability will be helpful, in these conditions,"

Meanwhile, the Test squad also saw the return of Abu Jayed Rahi in addition to Taskin, while Ariful Haque and Soumya Sarkar has been omitted.
