Cricket news - Neesham, Astle return for final two India ODIs

Neesham smashed ten sixes in the three games against Sri Lanka recently.

All-rounder James Neesham and legspinner Todd Astle returned to the new Zealand squad for the last two One-day internationals against India. After we already lost the series, new Zealand left out Doug Bracewell and legspinner Ish Sodhi.

Bracewell proved expensive with the ball in the last two games and had one goal from the last three games. He has contributed with the bat in the second game, albeit with a quickfire half-century. Sodhi to impress with the ball in the two games he played, as he went wicketless.

Neesham had recently made a comeback to the ODI side after tendon almost two years in the home series against Sri Lanka and smashed ten sixes in the three games he played before the injury to his Achilles. After regaining fitness, Neesham and played a few games in the Super Smash for Wellington, before he received a callback.

Astle, who has played only 11 games, was sidelined for a long time with a knee injury, but has now been given the opportunity to make an impact against new Zealand to settle on its world Cup-combination. Not a competition-played, competitive game since November, Astle proved his fitness by turning for Canterbury in the Super Smash four times in this month.

"Doug and Ish were encouraged two of the brighter spots in the ODI series so far, and we were by your performance against a quality Indian side," new Zealand selector Gavin Larsen said. "It's nice to see welcome back the all-round skills of Jimmy, and Todd, and we look forward, what can you bring to the series. We are still looking to open our options with the selection at this stage and ensure that we continue to learn as much as we can about our players."

The last two matches, will be played at Hamilton and Wellington on the 31. January and 3. February in each case.
