Cricket news - Clinical Victorians surge to the top spot

Tamim Iqbal was unbeaten on 54.

Chittagong Vikings vs Comilla Victorians

Comilla Victorians surged to the top of the table following another clinical show with both bat and ball on Tuesday (January 29). Victorians smashed Chittagong Vikings with 14 balls to spare to register their fifth win in the last six games.

Mohammad Saifuddin caused damage very early picking up two wickets in the second over. The procession continued with Wahab Riaz, Mahedi Hasan and Shahid Afridi inflicting more damage in the middle overs to leave Vikings reeling at 70/7.

Mohammad Shahzad valiantly fought for a 35-ball 33 at one end but if not for a stunning cameo at the death from Mosaddek Hossain, Vikings wouldn't have touched three figures. Mosaddek smashed three fours and three sixes in his 25-ball 43 as Vikings reached 116 in their quota of 19 overs (due to rain).

Chasing a tricky little score, Shamsur Rahman went on the rampage following Anamul Haque's dismissal. At the other end, Tamim Iqbal played a sedate knock ensuring he batted through the chase to see his side home. While Shamsur fell for 36, Tamim remained unbeaten on 54 off 51 deliveries and polished off the chase alongside Thisara Perera.

Brief scores: Chittagong Vikings 116/8 in 19 overs (Mosaddek Hossain 43*, Mohammad Shahzad 33; Shahid Afridi 2-10, Wahab Riaz 2-23) lost to Comilla Victorians 117/3 in 16.4 overs (Tamim Iqbal 54*, Shamsur Rahman 36; Abu Jayed 2-25) by seven wickets (DLS method)

Rangpur Riders vs Rajshahi Kings

Twenty-four hours after registering his first BPL ton, AB de Villiers once again contributed with a vital 37 and stitched a 71-run stand with half-centurion Rilee Rossouw to help Rangpur Riders chase down a modest 141 against Rajshahi Kings. The duo rescued the side after Chris Gayle and Alex Hales were dismissed quite early in the chase. While Rossouw made a 43-ball 55, de Villiers hit three sixes in his 27-ball innings.

Even though both the batsmen were dismissed, the result was a foregone conclusion by then as Mohammad Mithun and Nahidul Islam completed the win. Earlier in the evening, Kings never got going in their innings after opting to bat. By the fourth over, they were reduced to 28 for 2 and from thereon, even though they recovered slightly on the back of a 34-run stand, Riders continued to keep the opposition in check.

Laurie Evans put up a resistance for a while, making 35 from 31 deliveries before becoming Shahidul Islam's second victim. Christiaan Jonker, Fazle Mahmud and Qais Ahmad got starts towards the end but none of them could provide the final push their side desperately needed to breach the 160-run mark. Against an intimidating top four, 141 was never going to be enough.

Brief scores: Rajshahi Kings 141/8 in 20 overs (Laurie Evans 35; Farhad Reza 3-30, Shahidul Islam 2-28) lost to Rangpur Riders 145/4 in 18.4 overs (Rilee Rossouw 55, AB de Villiers 37; Mehidy Hasan 1-24) by six wickets
