Cricket news - Joe Denly to make Test debut in Antigua

Joe Denly recently played for England after a gap of eight years.

Joe Denly will make his much-awaited Test debut in Antigua, a development that was confirmed by England captain Joe Root during his pre-match press conference ahead of the second Test against the Windies. Denly, 32, who has already played a handful of ODIs and T20Is, recently played an international game after eight years for England and was included in the touring party for the Test series in the Caribbean.

12-man shortlist: Rory Burns, Joe Denly, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root (C), Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Ben Foakes, Sam Curran, Stuart Broad, Jimmy Anderson, Jack Leach.

With Keaton Jennings making only 72 runs in his last six Test innings, England have opted for a change at the top of the order following the humiliating 381-run loss in the first game in Barbados. Veteran seamer Stuart Broad and left-arm spinner Jack Leach, who were not considered for the first Test, have been named in the 12-man shortlist revealed by skipper Root. Adil Rashid, who went wicketless in England's loss, has also faced the axe.

"It gives Joe an opportunity," Root said ahead of the second Test. "It's disappointing for Keaton [Jennings], he's done some excellent things and he will continue to work on developing his game and be a big part of this squad."

Adil Rashid to fly back home for the birth of his second child

Another notable absentee from England's shortlist for Antigua is leg spinner Adil Rashid. The 30-year-old was granted permission to fly back to England for the birth of his second child.

Rashid had played each of the last nine Tests for England despite signing a white-ball-only contract with Yorkshire last season. He was picked in a two-man spin attack at Barbados but severely underwhelmed in England's crushing defeat, bowling 26 wicketless overs across two innings for 117 runs.
