New Zealand win by 8 wickets
Well, who's surprised. 92 on board doesn't win you too many games. New Zealand lost two wickets early but the partnership between Nicholls and Taylor ensured that they got home with 8 wickets to spare. The series now stands at 3-1 in favour of India, and it's largely thanks to Boult's menacing five-wicket haul that came in one ten-over burst. Chahal was India's top scorer, ICYMI. "One of our worst performances with the bat for a long time," Rohit summed it up for us. Here's the final report. Do have a read.
Bhuvneshwar strike# 2
I have seen Williamson edge behind, and there are no soft hands in play here. He's gone hard on defending this ball outside off. Outside edge. Taken. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, you beaut. 39 for 2
Ho ho ho! A six, four and four to start and Guptill falls to Bhuvneshwar's fourth delivery. A leading edge to backward point. What can India do here?
India 92 all out
It could have been over much earlier but Chahal and Kuldeep defied the hosts brilliantly for a while. Boult was superb with his five-for, and Chahal finished on 18, the top score in the innings. Only once before a No.10 has top-scored for India in an ODI - Javagal Srinath (43) in 180 vs Pak, Toronto, 1998. That's how dire today was. A short break before the chase gets underway.
Kuldeep, Chahal frustrate New Zealand
It's not so much the runs but the manner in which they are surviving. Playing inside the line, playing and missing, and surviving. They have lasted for 7 overs already and India's score slowly moves towards a hundred. 71 for 8 after 26 overs.
Five for Boult!
He equals Richard Hadlee for most five-fers in ODI cricket for New Zealand. And gosh he's deserved it. Bowls ten overs on the trot and finishes with 10-4-21-5. You could say that Pandya ruined his figures a bit in the last over, carting him for three fours, but in what was quite a redemption, Boult got Pandya. Bangs the ball short, Pandya cannot get out of the way and it's a catch off the glove.
Bhuvneshwar is no good either
I'm sorry if it's just been morbid wicket blog-updates today but that's how India are playing. Not giving me a chance, are India. Colin de Grandhomme gets one to nip back in and is bowled through the gate. 40 for 7 after 17 overs.

With India in trouble, it'll be interesting to listen to Zaheer Khan's analysis about what's transpired in the first 15 overs. Remember to come back to this blog. I have huge plans. Yea yea, okay.
Beauty, you Boult
India are 35 /6 and Trent Boult has figures of 6-2-8-4. Unbelievable bowling. And unbelievable batting. Just a hint of swing here and India have collapsed in a big heap here. Jadhav is pinned on the pad by an inswinger, and departs. And does so with the review, that was all formality. Three reds. Middle of middle. You want to know more eh?
India 33 for 5 - say what!?
What's this team India are playing against today? Like Rohit, Shubman offers a return catch to Boult, who doesn't drop many. Drops none ever. New Zealand seem to be making up for the first three ODIs in one innings here...
Double strike for de Grandhomme
Early wickets, you asked? India in tatters here Colin de Grandhomme's first ball was a warm-up wide ball, but he's got the ball to swing and accounted for Ambati Rayudu. Caught at cover for a duck. Karthik's wicket fell off the last ball of the over -- outside edge to the keeper -- and what a huge miss it is for DK. Could have been the day he finds his feet in this Indian side. Not to be. Not today.
A word on Gill
I may have just jinxed Shubman Gill here. No, he's not out -- I'm not evil -- but god he looked so methodical and calm until Boult pinged him on the helmet. At 19, you're mostly more embarrassed than hurt. And ever since that blow on the badge, Gill's looked a bit rattled. Boult even switches to round the wicket to make it tough for him, and then immediately back to over the wicket to beat Gill's outside edge. He's gotten into Gill here. Will be interesting to watch this battle unfold.
India lose Rohit Sharma
Not quite the blockbusting 200th ODI for Rohit, is it.. He's played one straight back to Boult here, who's set him up to the core. Kept bowling scrambled seam to skid the ball across and then gets this to swing in, and draws a false shot. And Boult backs it all up with a stunning return catch. India 23/2 after 8 overs.
Deepu says: Fourth time Boult has dismissed Rohit in ODIs - joint most he's dismissed any batsman alongside Quinton de Kock
Dhawan goes early
Now he's been caught on the shuffle. Was looking to flick but the ball scurries in and traps him in front of middle and leg. Out for 13 off 20 balls. No review? Nah. He walks off. India 21 for 1 after 5.5 overs.
In walks Shubman Gill at No.3
ICYMI: Here's the Cricbuzz Live pre-match show
Dhawan has started off positively as usual while Rohit is taking his time. A four and a six for Dhawan so far, both off Matt Henry in the 3rd over. New Zealand have kept it relatively quiet otherwise. India are 20 for 0 after 5.
Toss and teams
New Zealand opt to bowl. "Looks like a good surface, hopefully, some dew will come later. The stats suggest it's a chasing ground," says Williamson. There's no place for Munro, Ferguson and Southee; Ish Sodhi and Doug Bracewell were dropped from the squad a few days back. New Zealand have asked Henry Nicholls to open with Martin Guptill, Todd Astle comes in for Sodhi, and James Neesham populates the all-rounder's spot with Colin de Grandhomme.
MS Dhoni is still unfit and fails to make the game. Mohammed Shami has been rested and Khaleel Ahmed, the left-arm seamer, gets a game. Rohit has retained both Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in the XI.
In the lead-up to the game..
Mitch Santner talked about how India batsmen 'hate getting out' and they won't get wickets on a play; they need to pick them. India's fielding coach R Sridhar said that the team is looking to use these dead rubbers to try and give their reserve players a chance.
Rohit Sharma, 200 ODIs old
You age in numbers, even in cricket. Rohit is playing his 200th ODI today and what a career this has been. Wilting under the pressure of 'talented', Rohit found a new lease of life when MS Dhoni asked him to open, and here we have: one of the greatest ODI openers ever. You should check this stats tribute by Deepu Narayanan.
Who's Shubman Gill?
The U-19 World Cup winner has constantly been in the news for all right reasons over the past 12 months, making rapid progress from the World Cup to IPL to domestic cricket to his senior team call-up for the NZ tour. Find out the how and whys of the rise and rise of Shubman Gill.
Hello and welcome
Cricket might be the only sport that celebrates dead the way it does. In a parallel world, the match today would have invited doughballs for eyes after India gained an unassailable 3-0 lead, but look at us today: we're on our couch, cuddling in that reject blanket in the living room and swiping away at the Cricbuzz app just as our family hates us for choosing cricket over morning jog yet another day.
Sigh. They won't understand. There's lot to look forward to in the game. Shubman Gill is making his debut, stand-in captain Rohit Sharma is playing his 200th ODI, India's bating is playing without Virat Kohli, New Zealand have named a squad without Ish Sodhi, and Jimmy Neesham is in with a shout to play this game. While we wait for the toss, here's the textual preview and the video preview that you must brush up on.
