Cricket news - Highveld Lions clinch title on dramatic final day

Khaya Zondo's 89* for the Dolphins frustrated the Cobras and cost them the title.

Lions vs Warriors

Lions became the 2018-19 domestic champions in South Africa after defeating Warriors by 84 runs in the final game of the season. Needing a win to clinch the title following Cape Cobras's draw in the same round, Lions delivered a clinical performance with the ball on the final day to bowl out Warriors for 245, thus sealing a win. Lions had staged a remarkable comeback in the first innings when they added 301 for the seventh wicket after reeling at 96/6.

Bjorn Fortuin and Delano Potgieter scored massive centuries to help Lions post a substantial total in the first innings. Warriors replied with a pretty good effort themselves, falling short of Lions' tally only by 37 runs. Kagiso Rapulana then struck a wonderful century in the second innings where Lions showed some urgency to push for a win and eventually declared at 292/9, an effort that proved to be enough to snatch the title that appeared to be heading to the Cobras franchise. Warriors, with three wins, finished third on the table.

Brief scores: Lions 440 (Bjorn Fortuin 183, Delano Potgieter 145; Glenton Stuurman 5-110) & 292/9d (Kagiso Rapulana 114*; Sithembile Langa 5-61) beat Warriors 403 (Thomas Kaber 85; Delano Potgieter 4-81) & 245 (Yaseen Vallie 74; Nandre Burger 4-72) by 84 runs

Dolphins vs Cape Cobras

Leading the table for most part of the season, Cape Cobras let the title slip away in agonising fashion after managing only a draw in their final game of the season against Dolphins. Cobras had done well with the ball to bowl out Dolphins for just 310 considering the opposition were strongly placed at 216/2 at one stage. In reply, a sparkling double century from Zubayr Hamza had helped them post 523/7 on the board. A lead of 213 runs in the first innings seemed to be enough initially but the Dolphins managed to frustrate them.

The top four batsmen chipped in with half-centuries to keep Cobras at bay. Michael Erlank and first-innings centurion Vaughn van Jaarsveld scored 85 and 79 respectively to add 169 for the opening wicket. Even though both the batsmen were dismissed off successive overs, Marques Ackermann and Khaya Zondo continued to remain stubborn and eat away at the deficit at the same time. Both batsmen were unbeaten in their eighties before the two skippers shook hands to signal the draw.

Cobras finished second in the table with six wins while Dolphins with just a solitary win, finished fifth.

Brief scores: Dolphins 310 (Vaughn van Jaarsveld 120; Vernon Philander 4-46) & 358/2 (Marques Ackermann 89*, Khaya Zondo 88*) drew with Cape Cobras 523/7d (Zubayr Hamza 201; Keshav Maharaj 2-217)

Titans vs Knights

The contest between Titans and Knights in Benoni never got underway on all four days as a result of a wet outfield. The umpires didn't take a chance with problems persisting in the bowlers' run-up area. Titans, who were the defending champions, eventually finished bottom this time and Knights, who had picked up a couple of wins this season, finished fourth in the standings.
