Cricket news - Kraigg Brathwaite leads Windies defiance

Kraigg Brathwaite reached 48 at Lunch on Day 2.

Kraigg Brathwaite's two half-century stands helped Windies reduce their deficit to just 61 runs, with nine wickets in hand, at Lunch on Day 2 of the second Test in Antigua.

Unbeaten on 48, Brathwaite extended his partnership with fellow opener John Campbell to 70 before Ben Stokes got England the breakthrough they'd been desperate for. He then went on to add 56 runs for the unbroken second-wicket stand with Shai Hope, who went into the break at 22 off 39 with the team's s scoreboard reading 126 for 1.

Openers Brathwaite and Campbell continued from where they'd signed off last evening, adding to England, Stuart Broad and James Anderson's frustration. A dramatic first hour in the morning saw Campbell surviving a caught behind decision upon review when it had deflected off his elbow, and then Jos Buttler making a hash of a sitter at third slip, only to eventually fall short of his maiden half-century in a very chancy knock.

The battle between the Windies opener and Broad resumed on the second morning with the English pacer managing to trouble the left-hander more than a couple of times. Campbell, however, chose only the bad balls to collect his runs. His luck eventually ran out as he edged Ben Stokes to Buttler again, at second slip, but not before resetting his individual best score to 47 in his short Test match career thus far.

Hope's arrival helped Windies innings pick up some pace in the second half of the morning session while Brathwaite continued with the same defiance on the lively track. The pair ran well between wickets - converting the twos to threes and even running four once to punish England for their lethargic fielding. Hope brought the deficit down to double-digits with a picturesque cover drive off Sam Curran while Brathwaite raised the team hundred with a boundary to long-off three overs later.

Brief scores: Windies 126/1 (Kraigg Brathwaite 48*, John Campbell 47, Shai Hope 22*; Ben Stokes 1-29) trail England 187, by runs.
