Cricket news - Patterson takes over after Burns misses out on double ton

Patterson's fine fifty helped Australia score swell

Kurtis Patterson's well-measured unbeaten 74 helped Australia maintain a firm grip on the proceedings at Lunch on Day 2 of the second Test versus Sri Lanka in Canberra. The hosts were 474 for 5 at the break.

Patterson and Burns (180), the two overnight batsmen, however, had to wade through some disciplined bowling from Sri Lanka at the start of the day. Kasun Rajitha, the best bowler on show for the visitors in the Test, generated a hint of swing and also extracted seam movement to trouble the duo. The best of the lost came to Burns, who was beat with a peach in the 88th over.

The pair negated the early threat and forced Rajitha to bang it short with Patterson pulling it to the boundary hoardings. However, against the run of play, Burns pushed at one to eke out an inside edge onto the stumps off Rajitha. As the opener trudged back to the pavilion, he received a standing ovation. Unfortunately for the visitors, that turned out to be the only wicket of the session.

Tim Paine (28*) joined forces with Patterson to guide Australia past 450. Paine showed solid defence and blended it with cuts and drives. Meanwhile, Patterson completed his maiden Test fifty with a nudge off Chamika Karunaratne. It came as great joy to his parents, too, who were sat in the crowd watching their son play. Once he completed his fifty, Patterson played with more intent, driving and pulling Karunratne and Rajitha to the boundary boards.

Australia will look to pile on the misery and accrue a massive total. On the other hand, barring the initial half an hour, it continued to be a chastening experience for the tourists.

Brief scores: Australia 474/5 (Joe Burns 180, Travis Head 161, Kurtis Patterson 74*; Vishwa Fenrando 3-115) vs Sri Lanka
