Cricket news - Luus five-fer helps South Africa clinch series

Late inclusion in the squad, Luus picked up five wickets.

South Africa held their nerves to clinch a narrow two-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second T20I and seal the three-match series 2-0 with a game to spare, on Sunday (February 3).

Late inclusion into the squad, Sune Luus roared back into form with her maiden five-fer, ripping through the Sri Lanka middle and lower order to roll them out for 105 with two balls to spare in their innings, after South Africa opted to bowl first.

Luss took out a well-set Shashikala Siriwardene (38) and Imalka Mendis (12) in the space of three deliveries, triggering a massive collapse. The visitors folded for a paltry score after being 89 for 3 in the middle of the 16th over. Earlier, it was Marizanne Kapp who dismissed both openers in successive overs to leave Sri Lanka in early trouble.

South Africa began their chase of 106 with skipper Dane van Niekerk hammering 33 off the 35 runs in the opening stand all by herself in just 19 deliveries. But Inoka Ranaweera's double strike next had South Africa going through a collapse of their own, where they failed to stitch a partnership together. At the end of the 14th over, the home team were staring down the barrel at 76 for 5.

Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu added to their woes by taking out two more cheaply lower down the order in her successive overs, but Nadine de Klerk held her nerve and got her team through with a penultimate-ball hit for four.

The third and final T20I of the series will be played at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday (February 6), before the three-match ODI series kicks in from February 11.

Brief scores: Sri Lanka 105 in 19.4 overs (Shashikala Siriwardene 38; Sune Luus 5-14, Marizanne Kapp 3-17) lost to South Africa 107/8 in 19.5 overs (Dane van Niekerk 33; Shashikala Siriwardene 2-12, Inoka Ranaweera 2-15, Chamari Athapaththu 2-18) by two wickets.
