Cricket news - Mohammad Sami to lead Islamabad United

Mohammad Sami has been Islamabad United's frontline pacer

Mohammad Sami will lead defending champions Islamabad United in the fourth edition of the Pakistan Super League, the franchise announced on Monday. Sami has previously captained Karachi in 27 T20 matches. The 37-year-old fast-bowler has been with the United and is the second highest wicket-taker, behind Wahab Riaz, with 37 wickets in 27 matches in the league's history.

"It's an honour for me that Islamabad United and Ali Naqvi [franchise owner] have selected me to lead the franchise," Sami said after he was announced as the captain. "I have always aimed to give my all to the team, to repay the faith that they have vested in me, and I hope that I will be able to rise to this challenge too. I feel privileged to have been given this opportunity and I hope that I will continue Islamabad United's tradition of success."

Sami has been United's frontline bowler. He has not only contributed to the franchise by picking up wickets regularly but has also kept things tight for the opposition batsmen, something that his economy rate of 6.55 - which is the best amongst top ten fast bowlers - underscores.

Speaking about Sami's new role, Naqvi said: "Sami has always served the franchise with utmost respect and honour. He has always conducted himself in way that defines us and has been one of the stars for the team over the past three years, winning multiple matches on his own. Furthermore, he has years of captaincy experience - he has captained various Karachi teams, on and off, for almost a decade now, and has been successful in that role."

The franchise earlier revealed Shadab Khan as its vice-captain. Islamabad United begin their title defense against Lahore Qalandars on February 14.
