Cricket news - Lower order rallies to keep Saurashtra in the hunt

Umesh Yadav dismissed the centurion Snell Patel

In a series of twists and turns, it was Saurashtra's turn to stage a fightback, very similar to the one Vidarbha came up with on day two as their lower order rallied to keep the home side's first-innings lead to just five. Vidarbha's tail wagged long enough to carry the side to 312 in the first innings and in reply, Saurashtra were trailing the hosts by 154 runs with only five wickets, having lost the key wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara for just 1.

On the third morning, Saurashtra were handed a double blow with overnight batsmen Prerak Mankad and Snell Patel getting dismissed for the addition of only 26 runs. While Aditya Sarwate trapped Mankad leg-before-wicket, Patel was sent back to the pavilion by Umesh Yadav. Even though Patel went onto complete a century, his dismissal gave Vidarbha hopes of fetching a lead of around 100 before the lower order began offering resistance.

First, it was the pair of Kamlesh Makvana and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja to fight back with a 38-run stand that brought down the deficit to double digits before skipper Jaydev Unadkat stood firm in Vidarbha's path. Once Makvana was dismissed, Unadkat and last-man Chetan Sakariya added vital runs to eat into the deficit. Unadkat made a patient 46 off 101 balls and added 60 runs for the final wicket and had put his side on the verge of fetching the vital first-innings lead before Akshay Wakhare picked up his fourth wicket as the Saurashtra skipper swept one straight to backward square leg.

With plenty of time left in the game, Vidarbha adopted a safer approach in the second innings scoring at a run rate of just over one to begin with. Jadeja then struck a vital blow when Faiz Fazal lost his leg stump in his attempt to sweep. Jadeja also went onto dismiss Sanjay Ramaswamy for a 72-ball 16 but Ganesh Satish kept the scorecard moving with a four and a six. Ahead by 60 at stumps, the hosts will look to the experienced pair of Satish and Wasim Jaffer to help them take the lead past the 200-run mark.

Brief scores: Vidarbha 312 & 55/2 (Ganesh Satish 24*; Dharmendrasinh Jadeja 2-36) lead Saurashtra 307 (Snell Patel 102, Jaydev Unadkat 46; Aditya Sarwate 5-98, Akshay Wakhare 4-80) by 60 runs
