Cricket news - Gabriel warned for using abusive language

Words were exchanged between Shannon Gabriel and Joe Root

Shannon Gabriel has received a warning from the onfield umpires for using abusive language during day three of the third Test in St. Lucia. England skipper Joe Root, who was in the middle of the action, chose not to divulge the details of what transpired while speaking to the media at the end of the day's play.

The incident in question took place at the end of the 44th over, when Gabriel was bowling to Joe Root and Joe Denly, with England well set on 138 for two in their second innings. In a recording of the incident, which was circulated on Twitter, Root appears to tell Gabriel, "there is nothing wrong with being gay". The implication is that the fast bowler had uttered a homophobic slur.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the match referee Jeff Crowe was satisfied the umpires dealt with the matter on the field. Gabriel, who was ticking throughout the third day as England amassed a lead of 448, will face no further action. In his press conference, Root refused to confirm what was said in the exchange.

"Sometimes people say things on the field they might regret, but they should stay on the field," said Root, who finished the day with his 16th Test hundred. "He's a good guy who plays hard cricket and is proud to be in the position he is. The battle was a good contest, he's had a wonderful series and he should be proud. I don't want anything said in the middle to ruin what's been a good Test series for him and his team."

Speaking at stumps, West Indies coach Richard Pybus stated he had not heard anything but would investigate the matter if a more formal complaint was made. "Nothing has been reported to me but if a comment was made we'll review it & if it was untoward we'll be addressing it."
