Cricket news - Rahane, Vihari revive ROI after Karnewar century

Hanuma Vihari was unbeaten on 40 at Stumps on Day 3.

A stroke-filled century from Vidarbha's No. 8 batsman Akshay Karnewar gave the Ranji champions a first-innings lead of 95 runs midway through the second session, which ROI's experienced pair of Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari wiped out by Stumps on Day 3 in Nagpur.

Akshay Wadkar - who resumed on an overnight score of 50 - and Karnewar gave Vidarbha a bright start to the day, adding 60 runs to their overnight total of 245. Wadkar scored 23 of those before being dismissed by Rahul Chahar, but Karnewar went on to make a fine 133-ball 102, his maiden first-class century, that included 13 fours and two sixes.

Much to the frustration of ROI, there were more partnerships to follow. Karnewar added a 76-run stand with Akshay Wakhare, during which Vidarbha went past ROI's first-innings total. There was hope for ROI to wrap up the innings swiftly when Chahar broke this stand with the wicket of the centurion and dismissed Wakhare too shortly, but more lower-order resilience followed. The last batting pair of Rajneesh Gurbani and Yash Thakur took their side from 386 for 9 to 425, before Ankeet Rajpoot trapped the latter leg before.

After having conceded a healthy first-innings lead, ROI suffered an early wobble as Sarwate and Wakhare removed the openers with just 46 runs on the board. But Rahane and Vihari came together to protect their team from an immediate, downward slide. The pair added an undefeated stand worth 56 runs to take ROI to 102 for 2 at stumps.

Brief Scores: ROI 330 & 102/2 (Hanuma Vihari 40*, Ajinkya Rahane 25*) lead Vidarbha 425 by 7 runs
