Cricket news - Christian's heroics steer Renegades to summit clash

Christian's cameo helped Renegades chase down 181-run target.

Daniel Christian crunched a 14-ball unbeaten 31 as Melbourne Renegades clinched a thriller by three wickets against Sydney Sixers in the second semifinal of the BBL 2019. Kane Richardson cracked a boundary off the fifth ball of the final over to ensure Renegades chased down the target with just a ball to spare.

Renegades required an imposing 38 runs from three overs. It was Christian who lifted the franchise's spirits by thwacking Ben Dwarshuis into the stands. He also smashed Sean Abbott for two sixes to bring the equation down to just seven in the final over. Dwarshuis dislodged Cameron Boyce via the hit wicket mode but couldn't prevent Renegades from crossing the finishing line.

Earlier, after Aaron Finch (44), Sam Harper (36) and Cameron White (29) had played crucial hands, Sixers' bowlers had combined to engineer a collapse as Renegades slipped from 101 for 2 to 133 for 6. At that stage, Christian joined forces with Boyce to change the fortunes of the side. Steve O'Keefe and Dwarshuis snared two scalps each.

For Sixers, Josh Philippe (52) and Daniel Hughes (52) had helped the franchise to put up a substantial total. Jordan Silk (17 not out off 7 balls) also played a pivotal role. Meanwhile, Boyce and Harry Gurney shared three spoils between them.

Renegades now will clash with Melbourne Stars in the final on February 17 at the Docklands stadium.

Brief scores: Sydney Sixers 180/3 in 20 overs (Josh Philippe 52, Daniel Hughes 52; Cameron Boyce 2-33) lost to Melbourne Renegades 184/7 in 19.5 overs (Aaron Finch 44, Sam Harper 36, Daniel Christian 31*; Steve O'Keefe 2-22) by three wickets.
