Cricket news - Dolphins defend 308 for second win on the bounce

Phehlukwayo's 61-ball 69 powered Dolphins to their 300-plus total

Dolphins defended 308 against Titans, despite half-centuries from Tony de Zorzi and Theunis de Bruyn, to pick up their second win on the trot in the Momentum One-Day Cup at Centurion on Sunday. Andile Phehlukwayo and Dane Vilas hit fifties while Robbie Frylinck's crucial late strikes helped Dolphins clinch victory from the jaws of what looked like a certain defeat.

Put in to bat, Dolphins saw healthy contributions from all corners. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dane Vilas stitched two useful stands - worth 51 with Morne van Wyk for the second wicket and 59 for the third wicket with David Miller - en route his 53-ball 54 that included seven fours. Dolphins then suffered a middle-order set back when Henry Davids and Lungi Ngidi combined to pick three wickets in quick succession to reduce them to 180 for 5 from a comfortable 147 for 2.

However, Phehlukwayo and Senuran Muthusamy put on a counter-attacking 111-run stand to ensure Dolphins finish on a high. Muthusamy missed out on his fifty (43 off 28), but Phehlukwayo hit three sixes and five boundaries in his 61-ball knock worth 69 that propelled his team's score past 300 after the minor stumble in the middle overs. Ngidi took out both the destructive hitters to try and limit the damage, but 308 proved too tall a mountain to climb for his side.

Titans seemed hardly troubled for better part of their chase. The openers put on a 61-run partnership to get things underway smoothly before Davids was dismissed. But a well-set Tony de Zorzi (89) added 114 runs with Theunis de Bruyn (79) to keep their side on track. De Zorzi was unfortunate to miss out on a hundred by 11 runs.

Heino Kuhn then put on two fifty-run partnerships - with de Bruyn and Heinrich Klaasen - to put their side on the brink of the win. At 280 for 4, when Klaasen departed at the end of the 46th over, Titans needed 29 off 24 balls. However, Frylinck snapped three wickets in his death overs spell to restrict the hosts to just 296 and earn four more points for his side.

Brief scores: Dolphins 308/7 in 50 overs (Andile Phehlukwayo 69, Dane Vilas 54; Lungi Ngidi 4-47) beat Titans 296/8 in 50 overs (Tony de Zorzi 89, Theunis de Bruyn 79; Robbie Frylinck 4-53) by 12 runs
