Cricket news - All-round Jonassen helps Australia survive Satterthwaite special

Jess Jonassen took 4 for 43 from her 10 overs.

Spinning all-rounder Jess Jonassen's heroics shone bright as Australia Women prevailed over New Zealand Women in a last-ball finish at the WACA ground in Perth on Friday (February 22).

Amy Satterthwaite produced a fighting knock of 92 to take the game deep but her dismissal in the penultimate over left the visitors with 19 to get off the last nine deliveries. Veteran Megan Schutt held her composure to take Australia across the line.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand got off to an excellent start after opting to bowl as they got the big wickets of Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry and skipper Meg Lanning inside the first 15 overs of the innings. Opener Rachael Haynes tried to hold the innings together with a fluent half century, but the disciplined bowling attack kept chipping away at the wickets. Ashleigh Gardener (34 off 36) and Jonassen's (36 off 32) vital late contributions pushed the total past the 240-run-mark.

The scalps were evenly shared by all the bowlers with only Leigh Kasperek returning wicketless but even she was extremely economical. Sophie Devine was the most effective of the lot with a three-wicket haul with Rosemary Mair and Hayley Jensen providing able support. Leg spinner Amelia Kerr also helped herself to a couple of wickets to cap a reasonable bowling performance though New Zealand did let the hosts off the hook a bit at the end.

In reply, New Zealand also lost three wickets inside the first 15 overs, including the big ones of Devine and Suzie Bates with Schutt and Perry bowling incisive new-ball spells. However, Satterthwaite remained unfazed and chugged along, stitching valuable stands with Katey Martin and then Katie Perkins to put the innings back on track. At 188/4 in the 42nd over, it was the White Ferns' game to lose and they did just that.

After her priceless late blitz with the bat, Jonassen ripped through the lower middle order, leaving Satterthwaite short of partners. Few of the shots defied logic too with the required run rate not that threatening at that point. The White Ferns skipper didn't bog down and tried to finish it off on her own but that wasn't to be.

Eventually, 18 off the last over against the experience of Schutt was always going to be a few too many, especially with the tail at the crease. 11 did come off the first four balls including two boundaries but Schutt ensured that there wouldn't be any heists. Wareham and Gardener also chipped in with miserly spells for the hosts as they managed to squeeze their way to a narrow win.

Brief cores: Australia Women 241 all out in 49.4 overs (Haynes 69, Jonassen 36, Devine 3/32) beat New Zealand Women 236/9 in 50 overs (Satterthwaite 92, Perkins 48, Jonassen 4/43) by five runs
