Cricket news - All-round Linde stars in Cape Cobras victory

Pretorius struck 75 off 42 but the whirlwind knock went in vain.

George Linde scored a brisk half-century and then followed that effort up with figures of 3 for 39 from his 10 overs as the Cape Cobras notched up a 22-run victory over the Lions in a One-Day Cup fixture at Oudtshoorn on Sunday (February 24). Lions posted a competitive 298 and then staved off a spirited attempt at chase from Dwaine Pretorius (75 off 42) to move up to third place with eight points on the standings. The defeat left Lions winless from four games, although two of these games ended in No Result.

The performance of the top-four was the bedrock of Cobras' splendid batting performance with Zubayr Hamza's unbeaten 88 off 97 holding the innings together from one end. Before Hamza took over the mantle, however, came an 82-run opening stand between Janneman and Pieter Malan. The duo got to 40 rather easily but neither could kick on to make a substantial score.

Hamza and Linde then put on a match-defining 85-run stand for the third wicket with the latter donning the role of the aggressor. Linde smashed five fours and a six in his 55-ball knock of 57 before he was dismissed by Bjorn Fortuin. Cobras slipped temporarily thereafter with a couple of quick wickets before Jason Smith joined Hamza to lay the finishing touches to the innings with an unbeaten 35 from 27 that took Cobras to a total of 298.

In response, as many as four members of Lions' top-six passed 20 but the best of that lot - Kagiso Rapulana - could only manage 46, a stark difference between the two sides. Linde's bowling was chiefly responsible for the same, with his left-arm orthodox spin bringing Cobras the wickets of Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen and Nicky van den Bergh. When he took the last of his three wickets, Lions had slipped to 177 for 6, which in a couple of overs became 186 for 7 before Pretorius launched a single-handed assault.

The South Africa all-rounder smashed five fours and four sixes, striking at 178.57 from his 42 balls to score 77. He was ninth out with 36 runs needed off 13, effectively snuffing out the Lions challenge.

Brief scores: Cape Cobras 298/5 in 50 overs (Zubayr Hamza 88*, George Linde 57; Aaron Phangiso 2-51, Nono Pongolo 2-34) beat Lions 277 in 49.4 overs (Dwaine Pretorius 75, Kagiso Rapulana 46; George Linde 3-39, Dane Paterson 3-58) by 22 runs.
