Cricket news - Windies-England third ODI abandoned due to rain

Not even a single ball was bowled in the contest.

The five-match series between Windies and England will remain on an even keel heading into the fourth ODI as the third one was washed out without a ball being bowled at the National Cricket Stadium, St George's in Grenada.

Gloomy weather, a delayed toss owing to overnight rain and a damp ground was an ominous start to the proceedings. It only got worse as rain's nagging on-and-off presence was felt in a stadium that doesn't have floodlight facility.

After a frustrating wait of more than an hour, the teams managed to make their way out for the toss that Eoin Morgan won and decided to bowl. But there would be no action as the optimism of bright sunlight was almost always followed by drizzle that kept the ground staff on their toes.

After a wait of more than five hours since the scheduled start of play, the umpires decided to call it off. The teams will be back at the same venue on Wednesday for the fourth ODI, with the hope of kinder weather. England will hope Ben Stokes can take the extra day to recover from the ankle injury that kept him out of the playing XI for Tuesday's fixture. Windies, meanwhile, will have a decision on their hands, as Andre Russell is available again.
