Cricket news - Bavuma ton gives Lions maiden win

Needing 125 from the last 19.5 overs, a well-set Bavuma and van der Dussen polished off the chase without any further hiccups.

After two losses and two abandoned games, Lions registered their maiden win of the season courtesy skipper Temba Bavuma's unbeaten century on Wednesday (February 27). Titans' Dean Elgar's 137 went in vain as Lions chased down the 310-run target with three overs to spare.

Put in to bat first, Titans lost an opener even before they could open their account and the second one as well just into the third over of the game. And it only got worse with both Theunis de Bryun and Heino Kuhn getting out cheaply to leave their team reeling at 38 for 4 at the end of 11 overs.

Dean Elgar then joined hands with his skipper Heinrich Klaasen to put on a massive 202-run partnership for the fifth wicket that revived Titans' innings. Elgar raised his hundred soon after Klaasen's fifty. However, the skipper was unfortunate to miss out on a century himself, falling for a patient 82 off 105 in the 44th over.

Elgar, who hit half-a-dozen sixes and ten boundaries in his 137, departed soon after, and just as it looked Lions were making a comeback, Chris Morris single-handedly overturned the script with his unbeaten 51. The whirlwind 20-ball knock consisted five sixes and three more hits to the fence, and propelled Titans to 309 from their allotted overs.

While the momentum seemed to have momentarily slipped away from Lions in the death overs, the batsmen ensured they were back in control soon after. Openers Kagiso Rapulana and Reeza Hendricks put on 96 runs for the first wicket before the former was dismissed, in the 15th over.

Hendricks continued in the company of Bavuma and put on another vital partnership - worth 89 runs for the second wicket - to keep the Lions chase on track. The opener, who slammed a dozen boundaries in his 90-ball knock, unfortunately missed out on the century by just five runs.

Needing 125 from the last 19.5 overs, a well-set Bavuma and van der Dussen polished off the chase without any further hiccups. Bavuma raised his hundred and finished with an unbeaten 117 that included 14 boundaries. Van der Dussen, on the other hand, made 46 not out in the unbroken 126-run partnership for the third wicket that saw Lions march to an easy victory with 18 balls and eight wickets to spare.

Brief scores: Titans 309/7 in 50 overs (Dean Elgar 137, Heinrich Klaasen 82, Chris Morris 51*; Nandre Burger 1-50) lost to Lions 311/2 in 47 overs (Temba Bavuma 117*, Reeza Hendricks 95, Rassie van der Dussen 46*; Farhaan Behardien 1-35) by eight wickets.
