Cricket news - Six-hitting fest and Gayle's moment in the sun
The number nine ranked Windies surprised the number one ranked England in the five-match ODI series by levelling the rubber 2-2 with one match being abandoned. The home side came into the series on the back of a thumping 2-1 series win in the Test series but their numbers in the 50-over format in the recent past left much to be desired, having not won a series in the previous four years. It was a series where the willow generally held sway over the leather with the 39-year old Chris Gayle setting the world alight in what might well be his last series at home for the Windies, having made his debut in the last century.
Stats highlights from the record-breaking ODI series between Windies and England
Sixes, sixes and more sixes
46 Sixes hit in the fourth game in Grenada - the most in ODI cricket. They comfortably beat the previous record of 38 in the Bengaluru ODI between India and Australia in November 2013.
Most sixes in an ODI
24 Maximums hit by England in the Grenada ODI - the highest tally for a team in an ODI. They beat the record set by the home team in the opening match of the series in Bridgetown when they hit 23 sixes. The previous record was 22 sixes by New Zealand against Windies in the New Year's ODI in Queenstown in 2014, a tally matched by Windies during their run-chase in the fourth ODI.
Most sixes by a team in an ODI
66 Sixes hit by the Windies in the series - the joint-highest by a team in a bilateral series and joint third-most in any series. They equalled Australia's total of 66 maximums against India in the six-match rubber in 2013. However, Windies average of 13.20 sixes per ODI is the highest-ever for a team in any series/tournament of more than one match.
103 maximums in the series is the second highest in a bilateral ODI rubber after 107 sixes in the series between India and Australia in India in 2013. While that series consisted of six ODIs, this series had five game, with one match being abandoned after toss due to persistent rain.
39 Sixes hit by the 39-year old Chris Gayle in four innings - the most ever by a player in any ODI series/tournament. He beat his own record of 26 sixes set during the World Cup in 2015 by a whopping 50%. He now has 84 sixes in 35 ODIs against England - the most by any player against an opponent, surpassing Rohit Sharma's 66 against Australia.

More records tumble
3 Instances of players scoring hundreds in 65 or fewer balls in this series. In the first ODI, Jason Roy registered the record for fastest ODI century in the Caribbean off 65 balls which was eventually surpassed by Jos Buttler, who reached the landmark in five fewer balls in Grenada. Buttler's landmark stood just for a few hours before Gayle blasted his second hundred of the series off just 55 balls in the same game. Gayle's 55-ball hundred is the second fastest for Windies in ODIs after Brian Lara's 45-ball century against Bangladesh in Dhaka in 1999.
19 Balls taken by Gayle to reach his fifty in the final ODI in St Lucia - the fastest-ever recorded by a Windies batsman in ODIs, surpassing Darren Sammy's 20-ball effort against South Africa at the North Sound ground in 2010. It also happens to be the joint-fastest fifty in the Caribbean in ODIs, equalling David Hussey's 19-ball knock against the Windies in St Kitts in 2008.
76 Balls taken by Jos Buttler to reach his 150 - the second fastest in the history of ODI cricket. Incidentally, AB de Villiers recorded the fastest ODI 150 (off 64 balls) against the Windies on the exact same day four years ago in Sydney. Gayle reached his 150 in the same ODI off just 85 deliveries which is the joint fourth-fastest, sandwiched by Shane Watson, who took just 83 balls against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2011.
Gayle setting new highs
424 Runs scored by Gayle in the series is the highest by any player batting four or fewer times in a series. He went past the previous highest tally of 413 runs by Hashim Amla against the Windies in the Caribbean in 2010.
At 39 years & 162 days, Gayle is the second oldest to win a Man of the Series award in ODI cricket. The record belongs to Imran Tahir, who was 39 years & 193 days old when he won the prize against Zimbabwe last October.
14 Gayle became the 14th player overall and the second West Indian after Lara to reach the milestone of 10000 ODI runs. At 39 years, he is the oldest to the milestone. And 7109 days taken by him from debut to 10000 runs is the most by any player. His 25 hundreds at the time of reaching the milestone is the third most after Virat Kohli (37) and Sachin Tendulkar (38) - all three of whom scoring a century in the innings where they reached the 10K-milestone.
389 Windies' highest total in ODIs - fourth game of the series. Incidentally, it is the third highest total in a losing cause after Australia's 434 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2006, and Sri Lanka's 411 against India in Rajkot in 2009. England's 418/6 is the highest total in ODIs in West Indies, bettering India's 413/5 against Bermuda at Port of Spain in the World Cup in 2007.
2 This was only the second instance of Windies drawing an ODI series since October 2014 - out of the 18 they have featured in. The other one came against Afghanistan at home in June 2017 when they drew 1-1. The 3-0 win against Bangladesh at home in August 2014 remains their last series win in any ODI series/tournament.
