Cricket news - SLC regains full member status

Sri Lanka secured its full member status with the ICC while also receiving the funds that were pending since July 2018

Sri Lanka secured its full member status with the International Cricket Council while also receiving the funds that were pending since July 2018. The SLC managed to retrieve 11.5 USD from the ICC following 'high level discussions' with the sport's governing body, an SLC release confirmed.

Last year, the Sri Lankan sports ministry intervened to take control of the cricket board. This was a result of the election for the presidency of the SLC being suspended by an appeals court.

According to the ICC laws, any political appointments or interventions from national bodies is deemed illegitimate and the SLC was reduced to an Observer status. SLC was on the verge of suspension if a legitimate administration was not elected by the end of February 2019.

Shammi Silva, on February 21, was elected as the new president of the SLC. Silva, who was backed by former president Thilanga Sumathipala, garnered 83 out of possible 142 votes while his rival, Jayantha Dharmadasa, received 56 votes. Silva had previously served as the member of executive committee of the board in 2014.

Soon after his appointment, Silva participated at the ICC Board's meeting on Saturday (March 2) as SLC's director and paved way for SLC's return to the full member status. The payments to Sri Lanka, which were withheld after government intervention, were duly retrieved as well.
