Cricket news - Akhona Mnyaka stars in last-over thriller as Cobras trounce Lions

The Lions' chase was kept alive till the very end by Dominic Hendricks and Dwaine Pretorius.

Cape Cobras picked up their third win in six games as they trounced the Lions by three runs in Johannesburg in the Momentum One-Day Cup on Thursday (March 7). Set 282 after a century from Pieter Malan, Lions needed 76 in the last ten overs but lost a flurry of wickets to manage 278 for 9.

After a wobbly start in a challenging chase, Lions were reduced to 73 for 4 in the 16th over. The opening partnership was broken in the third over with just nine on the board as Ryan Rickelton fell to Rory Kleinveldt. Kagiso Rapulana (11) and Temba Bavuma (17) too failed to get going as Cobras mounted the pressure with timely wickets. The chase, however, was kept alive till the very end by Dominic Hendricks (107) and Dwaine Pretorius.

They scored 139 for the fifth wicket and took the team over 200. The best part of the stand was that they never really allowed the asking rate to climb up. After needing 132 in the final 20 overs, they looked set to drive home the advantage. However, JP Duminy dismissed Hendricks to turn the game. Lions lost another wicket as the onus fell on Pretorius to carry the team home.

He smashed 18 runs in the 46th over and eventually reduced the equation to 24 off the last three overs. Kleinveldt gave away just seven in the 48th over while Dane Paterson followed it up with just four runs in the first five balls of the penultimate over before Pretorius hit a six to collect 10 from the over. Mnyaka picked up two wickets in the final over as Pretorius was kept away from the strike. Needing four of the last ball, Mnyaka dismissed Pretorius for 99 to seal the deal for his side.

Earlier, Cobras got off to a steady start with the openers scoring 44. Having crossed the 100-run mark with two wickets down, Malan and Duminy collaborated to score 115 for the third wicket to set the platform for a late assault.

Duminy and Malan fell inside three overs - in between the 40th to 42nd over - as Cobras suffered a mini collapse. They weren't able to take full toll and but still ended with a fighting score.

Brief scores: Cape Cobras 281/9 in 50 overs (Pieter Malan 102; Bjorn Fortuin 2-46) beat Lions 278/9 in 50 overs (Dominic Hendricks 107; Akhona Mnyaka 3-49) by three runs.
