Cricket news - Defiant Tasmania hold Victoria to a draw

Doolan's resistance helped Tasmania hold on to a draw

A spirited effort from the Tasmania batting department helped them secure a draw against table-toppers Victoria in the Sheffield Shield clash at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium on Friday (March 8). Chasing 476 for an unlikely victory, Tasmania finished at 197 for 5, having seen through 89 overs on the final day.

Starting the day at 27 for 0, openers Alex Doolan and Jordan Silk continued their resistance through a 112-run partnership that lasted until the 45th over. While Boland ended the stand by dismissing Silk nine short of a half-century, Doolan went on to bring up a hard-fought fifty and put on 48 runs with Charlie Wakim.

Doolan's departure, followed shortly by Matthew Wade's dismissal, lifted Victoria's hopes but Wakim and Ben McDermott ensured any threat from the home team bowlers was negated. Wakim batted 125 deliveries for his 36 while McDermott, played out 98 deliveries for his score of 5, holding fort along with Jake Doran and Jarrod Freeman to ensure a draw.

With two more rounds remaining in the tournament before the final, Victoria are top with 39 points, with only a two-point difference with the second-placed New South Wales. Western Australia, at third, have 28 points while Tasmania have 26 to be currently placed fourth.

Brief scores: Victoria 454 (Nic Maddinson 136, Marcus Harris 94, Seb Gotch 93; Riley Meredith 4-86) & 307/3 decl. (Will Pucovski 131*, Nic Maddinson 61, Cameron White 52; Riley Meredith 1-30) drew with Tasmania 286 (Matthew Wade 86, Sam Rainbird 59; Scott Boland 4-63, Andrew Fekete 3-104) & 197/5 (Alex Doolan 88, Jordan Silk 41; Jon Holland 2-42, Andrew Fekete 2-44).
