Cricket news - Wade ton not enough as WA pick up crucial points
Tasmania vs Western Australia, Hobart
Tasmania gave Western Australia an almighty scare during their chase of 454 before eventually falling short by 51 runs. Matthew Wade led the fight with a fine century but Tasmania could not rally around their in-form player and pull off a victory as they folded for 402 in 107.1 overs.
After starting the day on 54 for no loss, they lost Jordan Silk, trapped lbw to Matthew Kelly, even before they could add to the overnight total. They soon slipped to 136 for 4 as Western Australia took a firm grip of the game. It was then Wade collaborated with Ben McDermott (69) to revive the chase with a 183-run stand and took the team to 319. David Moody had Wade caught for 134 as the wheels started to come off. Joel Paris dismissed McDermott while Mitchell Marsh got the big wicket of Tim Paine (47) to quash any hopes of a late revival. Paris and Marsh bagged three each while Moody chipped in with two.
Western Australia, who are currently third, will now take on Queensland with an aim to reach the final while Tasmania will play New South Wales, placed second, from March 20.
Brief Scores: Western Australia 367 and 283/8 dec (Sam Whiteman 93, Darcy Short 61, Gabe Bell 3/72) beat Tasmania 197 and 402 (Matthew Wade 134; Joel Paris 3-64)
