Cricket news - Stephen Fleming steps down as Melbourne Stars head coach
Stephen Fleming has stepped down from his position of head coach at the Melbourne Stars, it was confirmed on Wednesday (March 20). The former New Zealand captain decided to call it quits after helping the side reach the BBL final twice and staying at the helm for four years.
In the last season, Fleming saw his side collapse against Melbourne Renegades and eventually falling short by 13 runs after being in a strong position. "I feel the time is right for me to step down and allow someone else to take the reins and the Club forward," he said. "The Club is in very good shape having rebounded from last in BBL|07 to grand finalist this season.
"Whilst we didn't get the ultimate prize I'm confident that the group of players we have assembled will be motivated to go one further next season."
Stars President Eddie McGuire confirmed Fleming will continue as the international talent advisor for the side. "Stephen has been a wonderful servant of the Melbourne Stars and we completely respect his decision to step down as Head Coach. He has left a large footprint on the Club which we will be forever grateful for," he said. "Whilst Stephen will be stepping down as Head Coach, he will continue providing input and advice to the Stars in the role of International Talent Advisor."
