Cricket news - Openers star in emphatic Dolphins win

Vaughn van Jaarsveld scored 83

An allrounder performance from Dolphins saw them pip their opponents Warriors to the second spot in the Momentum One Day Cup. Restricting Warriors to just 223/9, Dolphins picked up an emphatic victory with 85 balls to spare.

Warriors were on the backfoot right from the word go with five out of their top six batsmen failing to cross 30. They kept losing wickets at regular wickets with only skipper JJ Smuts managing to score a half-century. Going through a bad patch, Smuts finally delivered as he struck a vital 99-ball 76. But just when the Warriors needed him at the death overs, the skipper was run out and his dismissal pegged them back further.

Onke Nyaku contributed a vital 34 that helped them cross 200 but they soon realised that their score was never going to be enough. Dolphins' openers got off to a very good start to put Warriors under pressure very early. Both Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Sarel Erwee were aggressive in their stand as they added 147 for the opening wicket.

With the run rate above six already, victory was just a mere formality at that stage for Dolphins as both openers also had a century for the taking. Van Jaarsveld couldn't get to the landmark as he fell 17 short of the landmark but his opening partner Erwee got to his second century of the campaign and remained unbeaten on 105. He had Marques Ackerman for company at the other end to complete the dominant win.

Brief scores: Warriors 223/9 in 50 overs (JJ Smuts 76; Okuhle Cele 3-52, Prenelan Subrayen 2-44) lost to Dolphins 229/1 in 35.5 overs (Sarel Erwee 105*, Vaughn van Jaarsveld 83) by 9 wickets
