Cricket news - Haris Sohail ton powers Pakistan to 280

Haris Sohail cracked his maiden ODI ton

Led by Haris Sohail's 101*, Pakistan powered to 280 for 5 in their allotted 50 overs in the first ODI on Friday (March 22) after electing to bat first on a slowish Sharjah wicket.

Cock-a-hoop after their victorious campaign in India, Australia started off on a disciplined note on a sluggish wicket. Debutant Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq remained dour in their approach. But the introduction of spinners from both ends spelt success for Australia as they got rid of Imam through Lyon.

Haris joined Shan Masood and the run accumulation carried on before Shan fell prey to Nathan Coulter-Nile for 40, thereby, missing out on a fifty on ODI debut. But the stage was set for Umar Akmal. On his comeback game, Akmal, after a silent start, went after Jhye Richardson and smacked him for three sixes. But just as he was looking to power along, he was dismissed straight after the second drinks break.

Shoaib Malik's stay was brief but he contributed with a quick 7-ball 11. But Sohail managed to push along and got to his maiden ODI ton. Pakistan got the final flourish thanks to a 13-ball 28 from Imad Wasim whose exploits ensured that 86 came off the last 10 overs.

For the visitors, the spinners bowled the lion share of overs as the combo of Lyon-Zampa-Maxwell bowled 30 overs, conceding 139 runs.

Brief Scores: Pakistan 280/5 in 50 overs (Haris Sohail 101*, Umar Akmal 48; Nathan Coulter-Nile 2-61) vs Australia.
