Cricket news - Finch, Marsh put Australia 1-0 up

Finch made 116 off 135 balls.

Aaron Finch found his lost form to eventually score a ton and propel Australia to a 1-0 lead against Pakistan on Friday (22nd March 2019). Australia hardly broke a sweat in overhauling 281 as they tracked down the target in 49 overs with 8 wickets in hand with dew also playing a decisive role during the chase.

Aaron Finch was the chief architect as he orchestrated the chase with his 12th ODI ton. Finch and Khawaja started off on a quick note before the latter departed. Shaun Marsh joined his skipper and together they stitched a massive partnership worth 172 to take Australia to the brink before Pakistan got a late strike in the form of Finch.

The skipper's wicket didn't create any sort of panic with Peter Handscomb being busy in his short stay. While Marsh finished unbeaten on 91, Handscomb did most of the scoring in the end making an unbeaten 30 off just 27 deliveries. Pakistan spinners seemed ineffective as well as both Imad Wasim and Yasir Shah failed to pick up a wicket on a track which was supposed to be conducive for the tweakers. But under the lights, their threat was negated with the wet ball.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan on the back of Haris Sohail's maiden ton got to 280 for 5. Shan Masood on debut gave a good account of himself while opening the batting before getting castled by Nathan Coulter-Nile. Umar Akmal, in his comeback game, joined forces with Sohail to revive Pakistan's innings. The duo added 98 before Akmal was sent back to the pavilion for a 50-ball 48 that had three sixes in it.

Even though skipper Shoaib Malik failed to make an impact, allrounders Faheem Ashraf and Imad Wasim made vital contributions at the death with Sohail batting through to complete his ton. A total of 280 seemed to be a match-winning one at the halfway mark, only for Finch to spoil the party and answer his critics in style.

The second ODI is slated to be played on March 24 at the same venue.

Brief scores: Pakistan 280/5 in 50 overs (Haris Sohail 101*, Umar Akmal 48; Nathan Coulter-Nile 2-61) lost to Australia 281/2 in 49 overs (Aaron Finch 116, Shaun Marsh 91*; Mohammad Abbas 1-44) by 8 wickets
