Cricket news - Live Cricket Score - IPL 2019, CSK vs RCB

Imran Tahir picked up three wickets.

Definitely the most boring match ever to kickstart an IPL campaign but the defending champions are not going to complain are they? On a turner, they just ran through RCB with their strong spin attack and then they were cautious with the bat to chase down 71 after losing three wickets. RCB will have a lot to think about. Their judgement has been terrible tonight.

Rayudu steps down the track to Siraj but fails to judge the bounce here. He wants to leave the ball but it hits the stumps anyway. The crowd erupts expecting Dhoni to come out but its Jadeja.

Moeen strikes

Raina wants to finish this but couldn't clear the man at the boundary. Moeen Ali gets a wicket. Kedar Jadhav is the new man in. CSK need 31 to win.

5000 runs for Raina

Chepauk is cheering! Suresh Raina becomes the first batsman in IPL history to get to 5000 runs. What a performer he has been in this competition right from the very first season.

Raina tees off

CSK have been calm until now weathering the early storm on this tricky surface but Raina has decided to take on Moeen now. He has hammered him for successive boundaries to make sure there is no pressure on the batting side in the second half of the chase.

Watto falls

He was struggling tonight. He was on 0 off 10 in the final last year and went onto score a century but tonight, Watson is dismissed for a duck. Chahal is happy. He goes through the defence.

Not this time

Opinion time

Yes, CSK bowled to their strengths, RCB batted poorly but how about the pitch? This is certainly not the pitch we wanted to see on the opening day of the tournament. What do you guys think? Should CSK get a warning for this surface? Or in the age of bang bang cricket, do we need these surfaces as well in certain venues?

70 all out

Bravo comes into the attack, bowls a slower delivery and Parthiv pulls it straight to the fielder. It's all over. RCB are all out for 70.

Nine down

Umesh played for the turn but Jaddu didn't get any and it went straight through to knock the stumps. RCB are 70/9.

PP survives

Parthiv Patel has been waging a lone battle at one end and now CSK want to get rid of him. Jadeja raps him on the pad but the umpire says not out. Dhoni goes for the review and the umpire was right with his call. The ball was going over the stumps.

RCB are 66 for 8 after 15 overs. Can Parthiv do something extraordinary here and take them to 100?

Rinse and repeat

Another googly and another wicket! Chahal actually connects this well but the fielder is stationed at deep midwicket. He hits it straight to Harbhajan, who has had a great game so far. 8 down for 59.

Another one

This is going to be a piece of cake for someone like Imran Tahir. All he has to do is pitch it on the right areas. He bowls another googly this time and Saini gets an inside onto the pad which is then caught by Watson at slip. Tahir thinks the batsman should be given out lbw. Dhoni challenges the umpire's decision and it is overturned. RCB lose number 7 now.

CDG departs

If Kohli, AB and Moeen can fail on this surface, then you cannot expect more from someone like Colin de Grandhomme whose strength isn't spin. Jadeja bowls it quick and still manages to turn to get an outside edge off de Grandhomme's bat. RCB are six down.

Tahir takes off

Just two balls and Imran Tahir strikes! The debutant Shivam Dube fails to read the googly and edges it to Watson at slip. RCB are sinking! 49/5 at the halfway mark.

Too late

What exactly is happening? RCB are crumbling at the Chepauk. Hetmyer would have been run out already without facing a ball but he got through that moment. And then he makes another wrong judgement by attempting a quick single hitting the ball straight to Raina. Parthiv denies the single but Hetmyer is almost halfway down the track already and has to depart. This is unbelievable cricket!

You got to be kidding me! AB de Villiers is much better than this. He first gets a top edge which Imran Tahir spills but then off the very next delivery, AB throws it away by attempting a lame pull. Considering the state of the game, you wouldn't expect AB to play such a stroke. RCB are in deep trouble!

Another one

Wow, this pitch is turning already and no wonder RCB are in trouble! Bhajji is having a field day. This one has stopped on the batsmen and also turned a bit. Moeen tried to nudge it on the leg but could only get a leading edge. The bowler completed the simple catch. AB is the new man in. He has to bat deep. RCB have made 33 in the powerplay.

Kohli falls

Massive wicket! He was getting frustrated! The pitch is already on the slower side and Kohli has perished. He takes on Harbhajan's shortish delivery but the pull shot falls straight into the hands of Jadeja at deep midwicket. Moeen Ali is in at number 3.

Toss - CSK opt to bowl

MSD isn't sure about the wicket so it's no surprise that he wants to bowl first. CSK are playing only three overseas players. That's no surprise considering Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of the tournament. They don't have Faf du Plessis as well so expect Ambati Rayudu to open the innings today. RCB on the other hand have picked Moeen Ali, AB de Villiers, Shimron Hetmyer and Colin de Grandhomme as their four overseas players.

Chennai Super Kings (Playing XI): Ambati Rayudu, Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni(w/c), Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir

Royal Challengers Bangalore (Playing XI): Parthiv Patel(w), Virat Kohli(c), Moeen Ali, AB de Villiers, Shimron Hetmyer, Shivam Dube, Colin de Grandhomme, Umesh Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini

Bursting the bubble

While we wait for the toss, our correspondent Kaushik has a piece on CSK and RCB's contrasting fortunes in the IPL. Have a read.

Build up

10 months since Chennai Super Kings made a remarkable return to the Indian Premier League by clinching the title, here we are, back in their den, to kickstart season number 12 of this iconic competition. No other domestic competition in this sport grabs eyeballs as much as the IPL does. This time, the tournament is seeing an early start as well. Is anyone complaining? I don't think so. This is afterall, the biggest carnival in the cricketing calendar every year.

Following an early auction, an endless discussion about workload management and player availability ahead of the World Cup, it's time to set sights on the pitch. And what a cracker to get the ball rolling! It is the clash of the two biggest stars in Indian cricket at the moment. MS Dhoni vs Virat Kohli one more time. The defending champions Chennai Super Kings take on Royal Challengers Bangalore in what has always been billed as the southern derby. CSK have had the edge over RCB most of the time, enjoying a superior head-to-head record.

Will that change tonight? Super Kings played majority of their home games in Pune last season so the local crowd will be completely behind them tonight. It's sort of a homecoming this season for the defending champs. If the practice session clips doing the rounds on social media are anything to go by, RCB will have to brace themselves for a sea of yellow tonight despite the three stands still not being open at Chepauk.

The onus will be on Kohli and AB de Villiers once again and this time, they have added Shimron Hetmyer to the mix. It will be interesting to see how the surface behaves. If it's going to assist turn, then CSK will have a massive advantage given their strong spin attack. But remember, they were already billed as the dad's army last year and now, they have returned one year older. Can they replicate their feats? We will get a fair idea tonight.
