Cricket news - Scott Boland named Sheffield Shield Player of the Year

"Scott had a great year and thoroughly deserves the recognition for his performances in the Sheffield Shield and with the men's Aboriginal XI" - Belinda Clark

Scott Boland, the Victoria fast bowler, bagged the 2018-19 Sheffield Shield Player of the Year, Cricket Australia announced on Wednesday (March 27). He was also awarded with Australia Indigenous Cricketer of the Year.

Marcus Harris, Nic Maddinson, and Matthew Wade were the other contenders for the top state award. Boland, who made his Sheffield Shield debut back in 2011-12 versus Western Australia, played a key role in powering Victoria to the Shield final by snaring 45 wickets.

Boland, who also featured right through Victoria's JLT One-Day Cup season and for the Melbourne Stars in the BBL, won the "best performing indigenous cricketer for season 2018-19". He also played for the Aboriginal XI that toured the United Kingdom last year to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first international cricket tour by an Australian side in 1868.

Meanwhile, Tasmania swept both the Men's Spirit of Cricket Award and Women's Spirit of Cricket Award. Georgia Redmayne, the wicketkeeper-batter from Tasmania, won the Women's National Cricket League Player of the Year. She aggregated 275 runs and effected 11 dismissals during the course of the season.

"Scott had a great year and thoroughly deserves the recognition for his performances in the Sheffield Shield and with the men's Aboriginal XI on their 150-year commemorative tour of the UK," CA's Interim Executive General Manager, Belinda Clark, noted.

"Polling votes from the umpires in five matches indicates a very consistent Shield season that resulted in 45 wickets and saw him finish second on the list of wicket-takers. Scott played an important role with the Aboriginal XI, his performances crucial in his sides' wins over the MCC, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Surrey. He is a terrific athlete and wonderful role model to young indigenous kids.

"Georgia also had an excellent year at domestic level for Tasmania, both opening the batting and behind the stumps," she added.
