Cricket news - Siddle, Pattinson help Victoria take control

Siddle picked up a five-fer.

On a day when 15 wickets fell, Victoria took control of the proceedings in their Sheffield Shield final against New South Wales in Melbourne. The home side were 48 for 1 in their second essay, in front by 216 runs.

It was the experienced pace duo of Peter Siddle and James Pattinson who ripped through NSW's batting unit to leave the opposition in a disarray. On a track that assisted pace bowlers, offering seam movement, the skilful trio of Siddle, Pattinson and Chris Tremain picked up a wicket each as NSW slid to 38 for 3. At that stage, Moises Henriques (35) and Jason Sangha (21) staged a brief recovery with a fourth wicket stand of 50.

With the score reading 88 for 3, Pattinson trapped Sangha in front to open the floodgates for Victoria to run through the rest of the order. Pattinson and Siddle also combined to dislodge the duo of Peter Nevill and Moises Henriques as NSW slipped further to to 96 for 6. NSW couldn't recover from the crucial blows and were bowled out for just 121.

On the back of a healthy lead of 168, the pair of Travis Dean and Marcus Harris shared a useful alliance before the latter was cleaned up by Sean Abbott. With 14.1 overs remaining, play was called off due to bad light.

Earlier, at the start of the day, Trent Copeland continued to maintain his rich vein of form, snaring a five-wicket haul as the hosts added just 23 runs to their overnight total of 266 for 6. The reliable seam bowler has plucked 49 wickets at an average of under 19 during the current Shield season.

Brief scores: Victoria 289 (Marcus Harris 141; Trent Copeland 5-74) and 48/1 (Sean Abbott 1-23) lead New South Wales 121 (Mosies Henriques 35; Peter Siddle 5-28, James Pattinson 3-30) by 216 runs.
