Cricket news - Pucovski half-century extends Victoria's dominance

Pucovski made 51 on the third day.

Victoria v New South Wales

On a rain-marred day, Victoria extended their dominance against New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield final. Victoria were 207 for 7, in front by 375 runs at stumps.

After the start of Day 3 was delayed due to rain, Sean Abbott generated appreciable swing and seam movement to trap Travis Dean in front of the stumps. However, rain played spoilsport for the second time during the day's play as the players made their way back.

When play finally resumed, Abbott again found appreciable seam movement via the Dukes ball to elicit the inside edge of Seb Gotch only for it to race past the stumps and into the boundary boards. Gotch, however, couldn't last long as he was adjudged LBW off Harry Conway. The 'keeper-batsman paid the price for playing across the line to a delivery that swung and seamed.

The trio of Will Pucovski (51), Cameron White (36) and Matthew Short (26) paddled through tricky spells as the hosts extended the lead past 350. At the fag end of the day, Trent Copeland, Steve O'Keefe and Conway combined to pick up three scalps between them, but by then, NSW were well behind in the game.

With the pacers finding enough movement in the air and off the pitch, it would be an uphill task for NSW to mount a challenge in order to win their 47th Shield title.

Brief scores: Victoria 289 (Marcus Harris 141; Trent Copeland 5-74) and 207/7 (Will Pucovski 51; Sean Abbott 3-75) lead New South Wales 121 (Mosies Henriques 35; Peter Siddle 5-28, James Pattinson 3-30) by 375 runs.
