Cricket news - County Division 1: Joe Clarke marks Nottinghamshire debut with century

Clarke remained unbeaten on 109

Nottinghamshire vs Yorkshire, Nottingham

Nottinghamshire's 22-year-old new recruit Joe Clarke scored the first century of the new county season as the hosts ended Day 1 in command against Yorkshire. Clarke, who scored 853 runs for Worcestershire last season with three centuries, played a stroke-filled innings and finished unbeaten on 109 at stumps. Before Clarke could take charge of the day from No.4, opener Ben Slater gave his side a solid start with a 76.

Yorkshire too had a new signing put in an impressive performance as their Kolpak recruit Duanne Olivier dismissed Slater and the opposition skipper Steven Mullaney. Mullaney's opposite number, Steve Pattinson did well with the ball too, picking up a couple of wickets. However, the hosts still finished with the upperhand at the end of the day as Clarke took them past the 300-run mark.

Brief Scores: Nottinghamshire 324/5 (Joe Clarke 109*, Ben Slater 76; Steven Patterson 2-62, Duanne Olivier 2-74) vs Yorkshire

Hampshire vs Essex, Southampton

Hampshire ruled Day 1 in Southampton via a 123-run stand between Sam Northeast (94 not out) and Rilee Rossouw (76) before which the former had added 75 with Aiden Markram (63) to push the team past the 300-run mark. Northeast's 153-ball unbeaten sojourn included 12 fours and a six, while Markram impressed with a 96-ball essay from No.3. Rossouw arrived when the first big partnership was broken and took on the Essex bowling in the post-Lunch session. His 76 came off just 66 balls as he hit 10 fours and 4 sixes along the way.

James Porter dismissed him eventually but Northeast finished the day six short of a century, and still batting.

Brief Scores: Hampshire 303/4 (Sam Northeast 94*, Rilee Rossouw 76; Matthew Quinn 2-63) vs Essex

Somerset vs Kent, Taunton

The first day at The Cooper Associate County Ground was washed out completely and abandoned without a ball being bowled.
